Middle School Advancement Ø 0 hour opportunity with transportation Ø Foreign language for HS Credit Ø LCHAMPS- Advanced math course through MSU Ø Springboard English Ø Project Lead The Way Ø (STEM) opportunities that lead to advancement in HS and possible college credit. More pathways available this year.

ELA Placement ELA Advancement u Some 5 th grade students will be selected to take a writing placement test for advancement into Springboard ELA 7. u This decision will be based on several pieces of data including 5 th grade teacher input, ELA assessments in both reading and writing, and placement testing results. u Testing will be held at the home elementary school.

MATH Placement Math Placement u There will be no placement test for math advancement this year. u Decisions regarding advancement in math will be based on several pieces of data and students may be placed into Math 6, an advanced version of Math 6 or beyond. u If a decision is made for your child to take anything other than Math 6, you will be notified by the end of June.

  8. Center For Innovation STEM Magnet Program Ø Project Lead The Way PLTW Ø Students cover grades 6-8 science curriculum as well as the PLTW components in grades 6-7 in this program.

  9. Year-Round Middle School Program Rolland-Warner Grades 6-7 & Zemmer Grade 8 We will be having a separate year-round night for our incoming year-round students. March 7, 2016 – 6:00-7:30 pm

  10. Athletics & Extra Curricular Activities All of our clubs are open to both 6 th and 7 th grade students. 6 th grade athletics include: cross country, wrestling, & track & field clubs

  11. 7 th Grade Athletic Opportunities/Timeframe Students can only participate in one sport at a time in middle school but may select multiple sports across the school year. Early Fall: starts week of August—end of October girls’ basketball, football, boys’ & girls’ cross country (distance running), & sideline cheer Late Fall : last week in October-winter break volleyball & wrestling Winter: January-March competitive cheer & boys’ basketball Spring: end of March-June boys’ & girls’ track & field, softball, & baseball

  12. Scheduling Timeline Counselors are currently visiting classrooms. Student Course Request Sheets are due to the teachers by March 10, 2016. Students will be placing their electives in the computers with the technology teachers. If you need to make any changes to your course requests, you can go online or contact: Mrs. Marthen the 6 th grade counselor

  13. MMC World Language Requirement u Two consecutive years of the same Foreign Language u Colleges such as the U of M like to see two or MORE years of world language in grades 9-12 on the high school transcript.

  14. COURSE CATALOG u The COURSE CATALOG is available online. Go to www.lapeerschools.org. u Select the tab for Parents in the top tool bar. Then click on the 2016-17 catalog. u Copies of the course catalog will be available in the counseling office and some building classrooms.

  19. The Zero hour option is only for students who have scheduled at least 5 cores or 4 cores plus band who want to add another core into their schedule to work ahead. Students taking zero hour classes will take classes before their traditional school day. Students will remain in the class for the entire year – drops will NOT be permitted once this Zero hour option class is added. Please consider all aspects of adding an extra hour to your day (sports, extracurricular activities, transportation, etc) and see your counselor with any questions.   20. Individual Questions u Both counselors and administrators are available to answer individual questions. u Our building secretary is available for enrollment, transportation, and other paperwork type questions. u Please feel free to take a tour of the building.

  21. Next Steps Students will turn in their scheduling requests to their designated teacher & enter course requests online. In May or June, 5 th grade students will take a field trip to RW for a tour, lunch, and a presentation by 6 th grade students. In late August, students will come pick up their schedules, have school photos taken, receive locker info, and tour the building. Any questions/changes regarding schedules should occur at this time as well by meeting with a counselor or leaving a note for a counselor to contact you.
