  1. River John Support Our School “Hub School Model” Presentation

  2. What is our mission… Mission: create a sustainable educational center that enriches the lives of the students and community as a whole.

  3. What is our vision… Vision: a vibrant growing community

  4. Why our school is important! ○ To give the students in our community a sense of identity ○ Foster community spirit and collectiveness ○ Keep our community united

  5. What does a Hub School look like… to the SOS committee Our “hub” will be built on the following framework… “H”- Health and Wellness “U”- Unity “B”- Building a brighter future for our community

  6. “H” for Health and Wellness Ideas to incorporate health into our hub • Blood collection • Foot care clinics • Wellness Clinics • Exercise classes/fitness room • Our SOS committee continues to work with our community health districts and private health care providers to gain interest in building clientele within River John

  7. “U” for Unity Ideas to incorporate unity into our hub: • River John Adult Learning and Continuing Education Program ( evening classes, cooking classes) • Community interest groups (knitting groups, painters, flea markets, “community school”)

  8. “B” for a brighter Future Through the development of a successful community hub, our community will have the tools to sustain a healthy population. How we are going to do this!...

  9. Highlights of our proposals Interactive Discovery Center (“Rural Discovery Center”) 1) Donations and a Trust for the River John Consolidated 2) School

  10. Interactive Center ○ What is an interactive Center? ○ Benefit to the students? ○ Where will this interactive center be located in the hub? ○ How will this generate revenue or money?

  11. The North Shore “Scholar Ship” Discovery Centre and Makerspace Community ― WHERE: River John Consolidated School WHAT: Place-based, experiential learning hub housed within our existing library space, utilizing our shop and kitchen areas and outdoor space as well. (Think Halifax Discovery Centre meets Lego land and The Epcot Centre—on a MUCH smaller scale.) A community place where we “make stuff “ and “discover stuff “ by doing.

  12. HOW: The shipbuilding theme honors The North Shore’s vibrant shipbuilding past, our agricultural, fisheries and forestry present and embraces the future in technology and innovation. To this end, we have reached out and held initial discussions with those with expertise. The Discovery Centre in Halifax, Science East, in New Brunswick, SuperNova in Nova Scotia. We are gathering valuable insight and information

  13. ― Imagine: An artist and shipwright, using a ship’s design, creating the “feeling” of a ship. A virtual mast overhead-displaying world flags. A night sky with constellations on the ceiling. Envision underneath this dome, interactive learning stations located in various parts of that ship –the helm, the galley, the crow’s nest, the captain’s quarters etc. Imagine: The range of subjects and skills a discovery centre like this could enhance, using basic machines like wheels and pulleys as well 21st century technology like 3D printers and green screens.

  14. Imagine: Hands-on Activities designed to acknowledge multiple types of intelligence. The list of subject areas is endless: Literacy and Languages --- Gaelic, Mi’kmaw, French, English History Economics Entrepreneurship Global Education Social Justice Media literacy skills Arts/Music Science Technology Engineering Math Astronomy Agriculture Geology Fisheries Forestry Marine biology Imagine: Tapping into the creativity of students and teachers and meeting “outcomes” for River John students, as well as creating a centre for all students of CCRSB and Nova Scotia. Picture an exciting and welcoming place for families and children on the North Shore after school hours and during vacations.

  15. Imagine: With marketing and tourism backing and partnerships, the great potential for revenue, growth, sustainability as The North Shore Scholar Ship Discovery Centre and Makerspace* Community becomes an educational and recreational tourist destination. We highly recommend viewing this useful Makerspace video to understand more Video. The link is: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=hOqTcQedDrw

  16. What we have started Initial talks with community organizations such as READ by the SEA, ( a national literary festival ), River John Pioneer, ( community newspaper) and River John Action Society, to see if leasing space might be a possibility down the road.) Writing Class: A trial run of 4 weeks writing class were held this fall. Twenty enrolled participants that came from as far away as Pugwash. Income generated was $1440. Harvest Fest - Oct 24th - 26th, 2014 The following is a list of events that the RJ SOS is responsible for during Harvest Fest: ○ Oct 24th - Soup Supper ○ Oct 26th - Flea Market Flu Clinic - Nov 6th, 2014 starting at 5pm

  17. Financial Report Our financial group has been brainstorming on ways to attain the capital required for necessary renovations to the parts of the school to be used as an interactive interpretive centre. ○ Capital improvements - Contact has been made with ACOA. ○ ○ Potential corporate sponsorship

  18. On going-Finances ○ The Municipality of Pictou County has approved a $30,000 annual contribution, either through reduced costs to the school board, or as an outright contribution. ○ The Municipality has also approved $25,000 to hire a coordinator to arrange and oversee our programs. ○ We have made contact with health foundations who may contribute funds for equipment for the wellness part of our plan. ○ We are exploring financial opportunities with various government agencies, private enterprise and individuals.

  19. Conclusion ― The members of River John SOS are excited about our HUB plans. We know there is much work ahead. And many questions we all have. We genuinely want to invite members of the CCRSB to partner with us and become co-creators as we press forward.

  20. Collaboration is the way of the future and we ask for your open-mindedness and patience as we go forward to find a solution that keeps our school open and enhances the excellent community school we already have. We are eager to serve as a working model for HUB Schools because we know RJCS can be a vibrant HUB for the larger community of Nova Scotia and an example of excellence in innovative 21 st Century scholarship.
