  2. You Want to Apply… Where do you start? • Read the RFA in full; more than once! • Highlight key and important parts • Mark dates in your calendar • Set goals/timelines • GO TO YOUR RESEARCH OFFICE!!!

  3. What can your Research Office do? • The earlier you talk to your Research Office the better • Not all research offices are created equally • They are there to help you succeed and guide you through a successful submission process. • Ask questions! It’s ok to now know everything about the submission process. • Ask your research office • Ask NIH • Reach out to colleagues

  4. What can your Research Office do? • Do you and your institution have the necessary access to submit proposals? • ASSIST • Grants.gov • eRA Commons • DUNS number • SAM.gov registration

  5. Start the Online Application • Who has the credentials to start and submit your online application? • Who is responsible for filling in the information requested and uploading documents? • Once the application process has been initiated online you can edit, delete, upload as often as necessary – prior to submission

  6. Checklists • Sit down with your Research Office and create a checklist • Who is responsible for what actions? • How does everything fit with the deadline? • Who is responsible for uploading each item?

  7. Set Internal Deadlines • The best way to avoid a last minute submission is to set internal deadlines and stick to them • Suggest a week before • Last minute submissions are risky

  8. Draft a Budget • The best way to know what you can afford and what you cannot afford • Know what is allowable and what is not • This can help define the scope of work based on what you can afford to do • Budget Justification – explain what you are using the funds for; don’t just repeat the numbers. Budget + Objectives need to Balance

  9. Time to SUBMIT! • Make a plan for submission and stick to it; submit EARLY! • Check your errors and warnings carefully • Always verify the submission in eRA Commons
