What is an Activity Follow? • It is a one hour detailed recording of activities a member of the nursing staff undertakes • It captures the task at hand and the location where it is performed • These pieces of information are recorded every minute during the hour
Why do an Activity Follow? To be able to understand what: • Activities are being undertaken by the staff on the unit • Find out how much time staff are spending on direct patient care Don’t forget the 10-point checklist • Where these activities are taking place • To find out what may be impinging on these activities, i.e. interruptions, etc.
Tools required to do an Activity Follow • A3 clipboard • watch with second hand or digital display • pedometer • pencil with eraser • activity follow sheet (A3)
Tips for doing an Activity Follow • Observer is a member of the unit staff • Choose a staff member who is representative of the unit team • Ask their permission to follow them • Communicate to the team and patients that you are doing a follow for “xxx” hours • Communicate that this is not judgemental but will help inform what needs to be improved • Review the definitions and modify as needed • Practice
• At the top of the first minute, the staff member was collecting a cart from the hallway in order to carry out a procedure
• At the top of the second minute, the staff member is looking in the supplies area for the supplies missing from the cart.
