Introduction • Commissioned as the 5th Advanced Service in England • Second year of the nationally commissioned service • Aims: – to sustain and maximise uptake of flu vaccine in at risk groups by building the capacity of community pharmacies as an alternative to general practice; – to provide more opportunities and improve convenience for eligible patients to access flu vaccinations; and – to reduce variation and provide consistent levels of population coverage of community pharmacy flu vaccination across England by providing a national framework. psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Data from 2015/16 • 595,467 flu vaccinations administered by community pharmacists • 7,195 (60.9%) provided the service • Average number of vaccinations by each participating pharmacy was 83 How many vaccinations will community pharmacists provide in 2016/17? psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Service timings • Runs from 1st September 2016 until the end of March 2017 • Focus of vaccination continues until December • Apply clinical judgment if offering vaccination in January/February/March psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews

The national PGD • One national PGD – not a locally authorised PGD • This year a dedicated PGD is being used • Download; read; understand; sign • Authorising manager declaration • If you sign a copy of the wrong PGD, it won’t be legally valid psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Patient eligibility • People aged 65 years and over (including those becoming age 65 years by 31 March 2017) • Pregnant women aged 18 years or over • Carers aged 18 years or over (this does not include care workers) • Household contacts aged 18 years or over of immunocompromised individuals • People aged from 18 to less than 65 years of age in clinical risk groups psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Patient eligibility • People living in long-stay residential care homes or other long-stay care facilities; however, consent will need to be obtained from the local NHS England team for off-site vaccination • If patients are not eligible for the Advanced Service: – but are eligible for NHS vaccination, refer to their GP practice – and not eligible for NHS vaccination, potentially offer them a private service psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Premises requirements • The pharmacy must have a consultation room in which: – the patient and the pharmacist can sit down together; – they can talk at normal speaking volumes without being overheard by staff or customers; and – the room is clearly signed as a private consultation area psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Training requirements • National minimum standards for Immunisation Training and Core Curriculum • Must complete a practical training course before self-declaration – list of training providers on PSNC website • Face to face injection technique and basic life support training required every two years • Declaration of Competence (DoC) – Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Advanced Service psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
The ‘how to’ • Developed by the CPCG/CPPE • Restructure – focus on reflection • Download and save the DoC self-assessment framework and review/complete competencies • Where are your gaps? Learning and assessment • Sign the DoC statement to acknowledge professional responsibility • Complete step 5 – date of declaration psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Key considerations • Make sure you complete the right DoC! • Read the ‘how to’ guide • Only sign when you have a working knowledge of service spec and PGD • Keep a copy of statement in pharmacy • Undertake every two years: Align • Core competencies: what are you doing to meet the standards? psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Practicalities • Arrangements for disposal of clinical waste • Hepatitis B vaccinations • SOP • Needle stick injury procedure • Anaphylaxis telephone card • Anaphylaxis pack • Service availability over full opening hours psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews

Top tips on running the Flu Vaccination Service psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Before the service starts • Think about your pharmacy and your patients – Would appointments work or would a ‘drop in’ service be better? – Consider having a six-week period when you focus on flu above other services • Be organised – Consider multiple delivery drops of vaccines, bearing in mind your fridge capacity – Utilising the skills of your staff is pivotal • Speak to your local GP practices psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Promotion of the service • Tell patients about the service before it launches • Promote the service using resources available at psnc.org.uk/flu • Attach small vaccination flyers to prescriptions • Have a list of eligible groups near the counter • Consider using website/social media • Go ‘all in’ – there’s no point being half hearted! psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Preparation at the beginning of the day • Have paperwork sets in order, ready to use • Make sure pharmacy staff working that day know who is eligible and the process in place at your pharmacy, e.g. – Should they make appointments or give an expected waiting time? – Ensure they know where the Anaphylaxis Pack/Adrenaline injection is kept psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
When someone requests an NHS flu vaccination • Pharmacy staff can check a patient’s eligibility and encourage them to start filling in a consent form whilst they wait for their turn with the pharmacist • Appoint one member of staff a ‘flu helper’ who can be on hand to help patients complete the forms psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
Administering the vaccine • The pharmacist will need to check paperwork and confirm consent before administering the vaccine • The patient must be given the necessary documentation in regards to their jab psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
After vaccination - patient • Once vaccinated, the patient will need to stay in the pharmacy for a short while in case of anaphylaxis • This is a good opportunity for the pharmacy ‘flu helper’ to ask the patient to complete the feedback survey • Can also advise the patient about other services which may be beneficial to them psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
After vaccination – pharmacy • The pharmacist and flu helper will need to complete the necessary paperwork and note the vaccination on the patient’s PMR record • Also, if your pharmacy uses an online recording system, the required data will need to be entered • The appropriate GP practice must be informed that the patient has been vaccinated • The necessary paperwork (other than claiming for payment) should be completed by the end of the day psnc.org.uk/flu #getreadyforflu @PSNCNews
