  3. Chairman’s Report The 2008 - 09 Season has been an historic season for RBYFC in many ways. In May 2008 after two years of hard work by many members of the club, Rochford District Council decided to keep the land behind the leisure centre in Rawreth, to be controlled and hired out by themselves for use as football pitches, ignoring our proposals to manage this at no burden to the tax payers whilst involving the local community in the decisions we would make. This was yet another kick in the teeth for the club and seriously brings into question the commitment of our local authority to a club that gives so much to the community. On a brighter note the Club have sourced a piece of land at Old London Road opposite the Chichester Hotel which will potentially give us five 11 a side pitches and three mini soc- cer pitches, these combined with the three mini’s already at Rayleigh Sports and Social will be ample to accommodate our thirty four teams and leave room to expand further if required. We can hopefully get toilet and refreshment facilities over there in the future and if we work the land properly with all of your support we can improve the drainage giving the kids something decent to play on. The most important part of this is we will have a place to call home instead of being nomadic across Rayleigh. Like most things it seems it is not all a bed of roses as the field is green belt so we have to apply for planning permission, which is not being helped by a couple of ‘nimby neigh- bours’, but lets hope the councillors on Rochford and Rawreth parish council support us in turning a green field in to an amenity for 400 local children. They are supporting 800 new houses on green belt in Rayleigh and Rawreth so surely they will support eight football pitches? This year has seen unprecedented growth in our club with our first ever Cougars team formed at Under 7 and Under 8 with our teams expanding further to thirty four. A lot of this has been achieved by the hard work of many Committee members. For the coming year we are looking to increase fund raising within the club to support the equipment re- quired at Chichester and more importantly in the current economic climate not to increase registration fees. In my four years as Chairman we have not increased our registrations which is a record I am truly proud of. We as a club have been subjected to the same cost of living increases as yourselves but sound management of our accounts by Margaret Cook and Clare Rankin Maclean and the funds raised from the quiz and comedy nights, the continued support we get from kit sponsors and the 100 Club all helps to keep the reg- istrations at the same level. We will review in May at our AGM the levels of registrations but I hope we can keep them the same for another year or two but a lot will depend on the support we get for our fundraising events. Some local clubs are already charging double our registrations. This year has seen two new members to the committee Karen Hicks (Mini Soccer Secre- tary) and Shane Bird, their enthusiasm and efforts are already being seen within the club. Whilst on the subject of the Committee, I would like to thank all the Committee members for their support with keeping the club running, some of whom do not now have children playing for the club. The committee is the backbone of the club, and we now have a very strong structured committee with a mixture of youth, enthusiasm and experience. (I am

  4. not saying who comes into each category but needless to say the ladies all come under Youth.) I would like to thank the three Managers who’s teams are leaving at Under 16 for all of their efforts over many years .Geoff Middleton (A Team) Colin Norfolk (B Team) and Russell Carter (C Team). It should not be under estimated how hard it is to keep a team together at this age with all the obvious distractions and they have all done it very successfully. Geoff is taking over an- other younger team, Colin I hope will still carry on as a valued member of the Committee and Russell hopefully will still keep involved. The good news to this is we have got at least one team carrying on with us to Under 18 so this is a first in recent years and keeps the boys in the club for two more years. Another milestone for this year is the newsletter. Communication is always a problem between so many people and the newsletter I hope gives you information about what is happening within the club, The newsletter has been developed by Neil Kirsh and is sent through to your e - mail on a monthly basis throughout the season. Neil has done a fantastic job with this so please contact us if you do not receive a copy. My final mention is the most important of all, on behalf of everybody in the club I would like to wish Matthew Ridgwell a speedy recovery, Matt is a player in the current under 10 Leopards and was sadly diagnosed with leukaemia last year. Whilst everybody has been enjoying the season Matt has been undergoing extensive chemotherapy, spending long periods away from home in hospital. Matt has fought this disease with the same way he has represented RBYFC with deter- mination, courage and a smile. Get well soon Matthew we want to see you back in that number 10 shirt from everyone at Ray- leigh Boys YFC. Well done to all the managers, coaches and volunteers throughout the club for their hard work and commitment to their teams and the children. We would not survive without them. Finally, well done to all the children, who have played their hearts out for Rayleigh Boys this year. Remember, win or lose always play fair and respect your opponents, and most of all enjoy it. Have a great summer, and look forward to a new and even more enjoyable season in the autumn. Martin ______________________________________________________________________________ Thank you to for the use of their car park this weekend.

  7. U7 Lions Nobody really knew what to expect from our first season, but on summary with one game left we are delighted with how the boys have performed. From 14 games we have won 8, lost 6 scoring 34 goals and conceding 19, and I think all would agree that aside from the games against Hawkwell. The other 4 defeats were by 1 goal and could have gone either way. From a coaches point of view myself and Ian have been delighted with how the boys have tried to pass the ball and at times we have seen some really good football considering they are 6 and 7 years old. Even more encouraging is that the boys seemed to have enjoyed every minute of this season. Player profiles: Alex Coleman: With no obvious goalie in the ranks Alex showed some interest in having a go so we threw him in, and his improvement has been a real bonus. Now much braver, more aware and with a stronger kick. Callum Blackaby: Looking like a real top defender, brave, strong and reading the game ex- tremely well. Joe Watson: As strong and brave in the tackle as they come, always listens and tries to put in place in a game what he’s learnt at training. Shane Rowney: Keen, enthusiastic and ever present. Shane is now showing signs of being a real- ly useful defender with no fear of throwing himself into a tackle. Cameron Harris: Always had the strongest kick ever seen in a 6 year old, but over the season really improved technically, helping defensively and scoring goals. Nicholas Clements: Becoming a real strong midfielder, decision making and passing much improved and chipped in with some valuable goals. Joe Thomas: The youngest in the team, but loves training and playing and improving with every game, working hard on making best use of his pace. Charlie Sullivan Great attitude, very skillful, carries the ball as well as anyone and now starting to link up nicely with his teammates. Matthew Wicks Enthusiastic as they come, loves playing. Top goalscorer, bundles of skill and natural ability and gives every team we’ve played something to worry about. Looking ahead to next season, we know it wont be easy but if we can continue improving we’re confident of being a match for anyone. A massive thanks for the support shown by the parents and for the boys for being a pleasure to coach. Ben & Ian
