  4. Chairman’s Report The 2010 - 11 season been a great year for the club with the planning permission for the 8 pitches at Chichester, the club finally has a home that we can improve year on year giving the Children a facility that is safe and hopefully playing surfaces that will enhance their skills. The club subsequently had to put in a planning application for the toilet block which although again was requested for refusal by Rawreth Parish Council the real coun- cillors of Rochford District Council again saw the sense in providing these facilities and unanimously approved. So now when your child plays football you can now use the toilet facilities and get a warm drink or food from our café, none of this is available at any of the parks we previously used and we are getting many envious comments from other clubs who wish they had these facilities. Like most things the whole site has been set up by vol- unteers and I would like to thank the following who have driven this project and put in hours of work to achieve this in an extremely short time: Darren Deal, Jim Cripps, Neil Smith, Richard McMeakin, Neil Kirsh, Mark Chapman, Colin Norfolk, Dave Barker, Ivor Knight and Chris Hockett. Many others have put in work but these guys have dedicated endless hours to the cause and the club is truly thankful to everybody who has helped in any way. Our second milestone for the year was to achieve FA Charter Standard Community Status which makes us one of only a few in Essex to achieve this and certainly the largest Club to be awarded this accolade. This award, the highest given out by the FA commends us on how we run the club and confirms we have the systems and people in place to deliver a safe environment for children’s football. The award will be presented at our presentation by Mark Francois MP for Rochford and Wickford who has been a great supporter of our club’s aims at Chichester. This year has seen unprecedented growth in our club with an adult section being formed with 3 Teams playing in Saturday leagues with a lot of the players being ex Rayleigh Boys players. We have seen steady growth within our youngest age groups and it is nice to see King Georges Playing Field teeming with 5, 6 and 7 year olds starting off with the Club. This coming year we are taking 4 under 11 teams into 11 a side the most we have had be- fore and a few of the “old boys” in the club are forming a veterans team so that should keep Southend A and E busy.! On the field it has been one of the most successful years I can remember with our Under 16 A team reaching the County Cup Final and this team and the Under 14 A both getting to the league finals at Roots Hall again this has never hap- pened before where we have 2 teams in the finals, good luck to all of you. We have a lot of league champions and runners up so all in all a good season but please all remember Rayleigh FC are about development and not winning at all costs. We are working in Chil- dren’s football and we should also all applaud the teams that do not often win but turn out in rain, snow and wind every week to train and play in the hope they can improve and we should always remember that those Children want to win as much as any others. Subse- quently we need to work with them to give them the best possible training to fulfil their potential. So please make as much noise for these teams as the league winners because we are all one big team across the club. For the coming year we are looking to increase fund raising within the club to support the equipment required at Chichester and more importantly in the current economic climate not to increase registrations. In my 6 years as chairman we have not increased our registra- tions which is a record I am truly proud of. We as a club have been subjected to the same cost of living increases as yourselves but sound management of our accounts by Margaret Cook and Clare Rankin Maclean and the funds raised from the quiz and comedy nights, the continued support we get from kit sponsors and the 100 Club all helps to keep the reg- istrations at the same level. 4

  5. Chairman’s Report cont. We will review in June at our AGM the levels of registrations but I hope we can keep them the same for another year or two but a lot will depend on the support we get for our fundraising events. Some local clubs are already charging double our registrations. We honestly believe that no child should be excluded from youth football because of cost. As normal I cannot write this without mentioning the club’s committee This year has seen 1 new member to the committee, Dave Barker. His enthusiasm and efforts are already being seen within the club. Whilst on the subject of the committee, I would like to thank all the committee mem- bers for their support with keeping the club running, some of whom do not now have children playing for the club. As I always do I would like to mention a couple of committee members Neil Kirsh (Publicity Officer) who has worked tirelessly in trying to improve communication through the Website and Newsletter and along with Dave Barker and Rob Smith has been the driving forces behind the goalkeeper training which has been well received. Paul Quick and Colin Norfolk (Our two welfare officers). Colin who have made great strides in getting our CRB and Coaching qualifications up to date which is an endless job and Paul who always deals with any concern or child protection issues with the utmost professionalism and always put the needs of the child first. The committee are the backbone of the club, and we now have a very strong structured committee with a mixture of youth, enthusiasm and experience. (I am not saying who comes into each category but needless to say the ladies all come under youth.) I am sorry to say we are losing three committee members this year, Shane Bird who is leaving to pursue other youth Football, Paul Sims (Adult Secretary) and Rob Smith who is leaving after 9 years because of work commitments. All three have put in endless hours to the club and we are all sorry to see them leave and wish them every success in the future. Anybody who wants to try and make a difference to the club or wants to share their skills can join the club committee, no special train- ing is required all that is needed is enthusiasm and a will to want to see the club improve. Please contact any of the committee members if you are interested. Well done to all the managers, coaches and volunteers throughout the club for their hard work and commitment to their teams and the children. We would not survive without you all. Finally, well done to all the children, who have played their hearts out for Rayleigh FC this Year. Remember win or lose always play fair and respect your opponents, and most of all enjoy it. Have a great summer, and look forward to a new and even more enjoyable season in the autumn. Martin Shields Chairman 5

  7. Girls’ Football Squad – Lily-Rose Bird, Ellie Slater, Hollie Wale, Katie Lee, Abena Oteng, Tabitha Esqualant, Grace Green, Santae Bell, Emily Glaze, Natasha Green. This season we took girls from Downhall and Grove Primary schools running sessions on a Monday evening at Sweyne Park School. The enthusiasm the girls showed and how the gelled as a group has been fantastic to see. They have all applied themselves so well I have been able to challenge them at every opportunity, their progress collectively and individually has followed a steep development curve. To be honest these have been some of the most enjoya- ble and rewarding sessions I have taken. We entered the Thundermite Girls Development League pitching ourselves against well estab- lished teams with players who had a few seasons under their belt. Our first match against Leigh Celtic over at Grove was a fantastic occasion, the touchline was packed and noisy with encouragement. Our girls passed the beautifully and played the lions share of the game in the Leigh Celtic half, the only downside was not being able to score the goals our play deserved. However Lily-Rose Bird did score our first ever goal with a close range left foot strike which ignited the crowd into a frenzy and players and manager performing a funky chicken dance. The girls had a great time enjoying every bit of the experience even though we did finish on the losing side. But hey they had the bug! Further games were played in Thurrock, Basildon and Rayleigh, our highlight being avenging that first match defeat to Leigh Celtic when we again dominated the game with some fantastic play but this time we scored the goals missing from the first game. Goals from Holly Wale, Ellie Slater and Katie Lee made this a one sided affair and showed how much all the girls have developed. I look forward to next season, working with this group as they are a fun bunch to be around and seeing the progress made thus far along with their potential is so rewarding. All of the girls have made new friends and have had positive experiences, which is what it is about. Well done girls, roll on next season! Yours in Sport 7 Shane
