Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes • where blood sugar damages the back of the eye A doctor takes a retinal image with a specific model • of camera and uploads it to IDx-DR’s cloud service The program tells the doctor that either significant • retinopathy was detected, or that it didn’t detect retinopathy and to run the test again in a year. The system was trained on more than 1 million • pictures of healthy and unhealthy retinas The software correctly detected more than mild • diabetic retinopathy 87.4% of the time • Human specialists not needed • Screening decision without the need for a clinician to also interpret the image or results • Usable by health care providers who may not normally be involved in eye care • The first FDA-approved autonomous-AI diagnostic system
The promise of AI to personalize, democratize, and advance medicine • This is part of a broader global trend • China is using technology to improve rural access to quality health care • Israeli company MobileODT has been offering cervical cancer screenings to women in 6 African countries • These companies are focusing on rural areas • Empower primary-care centers to conduct screenings during regular checkups
The promise of AI to personalize, democratize, and advance medicine • AI advances could help decrease global health-care discrepancies • In developing countries, the inequality between urban and rural health services is a serious problem • Researchers from Georgetown University and the nonprofit Washington Institute for Health Sciences noted that maternal mortality rate (often used as a signal for overall quality of health-care availability), is 29 deaths per 10,000 live births in rural areas across the whole world, compared to 11 deaths per 10,000 live births in urban areas. • The shortage of qualified healthcare providers is the major cause of the unavailability and low quality of healthcare in rural areas • Other health workers could also be trained to use this technique to compensate for the lack of physicians, thereby improving the availability of healthcare access and medical service quality
AI in personalized medicine • Personalized medicine (precision medicine) is a new healthcare model, in which the treatment and prevention of diseases are based on individuals' conditions • Conditions include: Genetic information, psychosocial characteristics, environment, and lifestyles • All of this information will produce a vast amount of data, which can only be analyzed and integrated by AI technology • The amount of information within the medical literature doubles every 3 years. It is estimated that if a physician wanted to stay completely up-to-date, he/she should read 29 h per workday
