  1. Sultan Qaboos University(SQU) Muscat, Sultanate of Oman Presented by Prof. Amr Radi Team Leader for Oman group a.radi@squ.edu.on and amr.radi@cern.ch IB Meeting of RPC 1

  2. Outlines  Structure of SQU  Structure of SQU-CMS Group  Joining CMS as cooperative member  SQU Long term Aims for Joining CMS  SQU Contributions in RPC  Summary and Conclusion IB Meeting of RPC 2

  3. SQU Structure The SQU consists of nine Colleges:  Science  Engineering  Medicine and Health Science  Agricultural and Marine Sciences  Arts and Social Sciences  Economics and Political Science  Education  Law  Nursing IB Meeting of RPC 3

  4. SQU Structure  SQU is the oldest university in Oman and one of the oldest university in the whole Gulf region (was Founded 1985 ) .  SQU includes 9 large faculties and several research institutes  SQU colleges are serving around 15,357 students of which 7,942 are female students and 7,415 are male students. 4000 employees. IB Meeting of RPC 4

  5. SQU-CMS group  The group was formed in September 2015 of 10 academic staff and 6 MSc and 8 BSc students.  SQU-CMS group holds regular weekly meeting since Sept. 2015 tell present. The group showed a great interest to join the CMS as X-Ray Photo Electron Spectroscopy full member in order to run strong collaborative research with CMS groups. IB Meeting of RPC 5

  6. SQU-CMS group forms fourth sub-groups: • i- Theory (phenomenology), ii- Data analysis iii- Experimental (Simulation detectors). This division was done according to the background and interests of the academic staff in SQU-CMS group which had mainly 6 physicists and 2 computer science. iv- Mechatronic Engineering which has 3 academics and one MSc student from college of Engineering. IB Meeting of RPC 6

  7. Objectives  SQU has signed an agreement (Letter of Interest LI ) with CMS since June 2015 which is mainly benefits the undergraduate and postgraduate students.  SQU has corporation membership since 2016 which provides higher level of research collaborations with CMS existing groups  The main objective is to train young Omani scientists in theoretical and experimental techniques as well as data analysis skills of high energy particle physics.  To expose SQU academics and researchers from college of Science and College of Engineering to one of the most challenging international collaborations at CERN IB Meeting of RPC 7

  8. Proposed Contribution of SQU in RPC  Research, Development and Simulations  Chamber Assembly and Tests  Data Quality Monitoring  Completion of the instrumentations needed for an RPC laboratory in Oman. IB Meeting of RPC 8

  9. Summary and Conclusions  Within one year (June 2015 - Present), SQU set the foundations of the CMS research infra structure by: 1- Constructing local SQU-CMS group of 10 senior academic staff 2- Encouraging post graduate students to attend CMS summer schools (10 are selected in the summer 2015,2016 and 2017) IB Meeting of RPC 9

  10. 3- SQU-CMS group has well defined three subgroups according to interests of the group members. • There is always a possibility of adding new members to the SQU-CMS group from computer and mathematics departments , College of Science and from Mechatronics Department, College of Engineering. Also the window is opened for researchers from other universities in the Sultanate of Oman. • We have a well organized plan for the coming three years of mainly - holing training workshops - MSc and PhD supervision - getting exposed to CMS type of research topics - establishing collaborations with regional middle east groups.
