  9. Challenges and changes Tough Decisions Demand for Services Resources Available

  10. National picture Richard Murray, Director of Policy for The King’s Fund , said: ‘The additional money for the NHS is a welcome shot in the arm as it struggles to meet rising demand for services. But it is still significantly less than the £4 billion we estimate the NHS needs next year. Even with this additional funding, the service will struggle to meet key targets and provide the investment needed in services such as general practice and mental health. NHS chief Simon Stevens said the elective waiting list will balloon to 5 million patients by 2021 and ambitions to improve mental health and cancer care will be jeopardised unless the NHS gets a major funding boost … government could be forced to “publicly, legally abolish patients’ national waiting times guarantees” and it would become “increasingly hard to expand mental health services or improve cancer care”.

  11. What are we doing about it? Across West Yorkshire and Harrogate: • Reducing differences in care provided • Preventing ill health • Accelerator zone for A&E • Cancer care • Stroke

  12. What are we doing about it? In North Kirklees: • Changes to prescribing • Referral support service • Health optimisation • GP extended hours • New frailty model • Working with Mid Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust

  13. Discussion groups Q1. Is there anything missing from the list? Is there anything that can be removed from the list? Q2. What health care services could you not do without? What’s too good to lose in North Kirklees? Where are our ‘red lines’ for change ? Q3. What can we stop doing, or do less of? What can be compromised in order to protect/grow/create the things that matter most?
