  6. Australian Tertiary Admission Rank VET for tertiary entrance ATAR Completed Cert. III, Cert IV and Diploma courses can be used for tertiary entrance in two ways: 1. VET incorporation into ATAR 2. VET as a standalone basis of admission

  7. Australian Tertiary Admission Rank 1. VET incorporation into ATAR ATAR Each VET qualification level will have a single scaled score that can be included in the student’s ATAR e.g. Cert III in Fitness and Cert III in Dance will have the same scaled score, regardless of duration or content A scaled score for a VET Diploma will be higher than a Certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than a Certificate III. VET scaled scores are unlikely to be as strong as General subjects.

  8. Australian Tertiary Admission Rank 2. VET as a standalone ATAR basis of admission Each university will determine it’s own rules for how they use VET qualifications and these rules can change Generally, school leavers will not be able to use VET qualifications as the sole basis for admission – 1- to 2-year waiting periods apply While VET qualifications should not be relied upon for direct entry to university after Yr12, Diploma  Bachelor Pathways between TAFE and some universities will continue

  15. Australian Tertiary Admission Rank ATAR Adjustments ATAR Universities have policies for giving “bonuses” • Maths C • Language subjects • University level subjects (GUESTS, Start QUT, UQ ESP etc.) Important notes • The student’s actual ATAR does not change • Bonuses are applied by the university during the admissions process • Bonus ranks only apply to courses that select primarily on ATAR score • There is no guarantee that bonus policies will continue • Getting a bonus should not be the sole reason for choosing a subject – the student’s performance in a subject is a stronger factor.

  16. Australian Tertiary University Experience Admission Rank Programmes ATAR • Most universities offer courses to high-achieving Year 11 & 12 students • Students can sample university life and trial up to two different areas of interest before committing to further study • These programmes are generally free and can be credited towards the course once the student starts at uni • Students need to seriously consider workload pressures and possible impact on ATAR subjects
