Government Precinct • On 29 May 2012, the Premier announced the Government Precinct Redevelopment • The precinct is generally located between the Brisbane River and George Street and between Alice and Queen Streets • The overall objective is revitalisation of an under-utilised area between the Brisbane CBD and the Brisbane River • The project will deliver high quality public realm, improving existing spaces and providing new places for public use • Protection and adaptive re-use of heritage buildings is critical • Development of the 1 William Street site is underway
Recent Announcements • Government will seek proposals for an integrated development through an Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the redevelopment of the precinct • The government has decided that a casino licence will be offered in the EOI process to encourage the provision of a world class integrated development in the precinct • Appointment of former Queensland Auditor General Len Scanlan as Probity Adviser on the redevelopment
Recent Announcements The redevelopment could provide: • A casino • Six star hotels • Luxury shopping • Restaurant and entertainment zones • Add image • Theatre and convention facilities • New open public spaces
Community Consultation • The government invited the community to have their say on the redevelopment – nearly 1500 people completed the survey, with 16 submissions and over 2100 specific comments • The Department also received high quality submissions from businesses, industry groups and individuals. • 23 days of consultation in the Brisbane CBD and at the Brisbane Exhibition (Ekka) • Feedback received is helping to shape the project during the EOI process. • Draft Queensland Casino Policy expected to be released for public comment in December 2013.
International Attraction Potential to increase Brisbane’s presence on the world stage: • As an emerging new world city with broad-ranging benefits for Queensland • To attract visitors and investors from around the world • Supports two of Queensland's four economic pillars by providing opportunities for construction and tourism development
International Tourism Focus • The Queensland Government recognises that increasing tourism is vital to the State’s economy. Tourism contributes $17.5 billion to the Queensland economy and supports 220,000 jobs • The Queensland Government’s goal is to increase annual international visitor expenditure from $3.8 billion (2012) to over $9 billion by 2020 • The government wants to ensure the development caters for the increasing trend of tourism from Asia, particularly China. By providing the world class facilities to attract China’s middle class, and ever expanding upper class, it will also ensure the attraction of international tourism from around the globe • Over 6.2 million international visitors travelled to Australia last year, which is forecast to grow to over 9.2 million by 2022
