Article in Australian Financial Review Magazine – CAPITAL 2012
Family has played a significant role in both of our journeys. They have both financially and emotionally supported us with our educational, sporting and professional pursuits. Ultimately they have always wanted us to have access to greater opportunities than they had.
“If you aren't going to bet on yourself, who are you going to back” At age 14 I didn't know what I wanted I didn't know where opportunities would take me So I set myself short-term goals Do my best in year 9 and 10, do well in the HSC (2 year goals) Finish University, play first grade (2-4 year goals) At 21, I set myself goals for what I wanted to achieve by 31, 41 and 51
The importance of setting goals “If you don't know what you're aiming for, how do you expect to get there?” “Failing to plan is planning to fail” Short Term (next 6 months) Committing to excellence Building good habits Medium Term (next 1-2years) Continuing study Finding employment Don't plan too far ahead!
Our Deepest fear Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness That most frightens us. We ask ourselves Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? – By Marianne Williamson
It is not about proving anyone else wrong, but about proving yourself right. We all fall down from time to time and it is how we respond to each setback and overcome each bit of adversity that counts. You are all capable of great things, you just need to believe in yourself.
Understand what work needs to be done and when Break the work down into small achievable tasks Understand deadlines and when work is due and gradually tick the boxes to get work done Keep up-to date... a little bit every day or so Attend class... and ask questions if you need help .... Make sacrifices And when you are studying turn your phone off and stay away from Facebook!
