Presentation of the Joan Upshaw Award Established in 2014 to honor the memory of SSWLHC leader Joan Upshaw, this award honors an individual who demonstrates the application of entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship principles in their role as a leader in social work in health care. It includes someone who has:  Identified and started new ventures  Increased the efficacy and efficiency of social work interventions  Generated new social work products and services  Advocated for the profession of social work

Tributes  “Sheldon has been a social work entrepreneur for most of his career.”  “Sheldon embarked on his entrepreneurial journey through ownership of a retirement community in South Dakota.”  “Sheldon launched another business in the home care industry by becoming an owner of Home Instead Senior Care.”  “Sheldon demonstrated his commitment to developing social workers” by leading a membership drive for the MOKAN Chapter of SSWLHC in 2017 “which led to a whole new generation of MOKAN members and leaders.”

Tributes  Sheldon merged his business sense and clinical skills in his next venture. He “identified an unmet need (that many seniors struggle with mental health issues with a lack of in-home therapy services offered to them) and had the vision to build a business model that provided flexible employment for social workers while serving a client population that greatly need mental health services” when he established Restoration Mental Health, Inc.  “Sheldon has never sought out recognition for the work he has done or the numerous seniors and social workers that he has impacted through his life work. He is kind, generous, and quietly goes about his business.”
