Presentation of the Bob Abson Community Service Award – 2012 Since the year 2002, The Rotary Club of Normanton annually present, The Bob Abson Community Service Award to individuals who are acknowledged as having, by their actions, made a difference in the community. This year, which is the tenth occasion on which it has been awarded, Mrs Janet Abson, on behalf of the club, presented it to Mr John Hodgkins in recognition of the help which he has provided to the community for more than forty years. He was also given a cheque in favour of the charity of his choice, along with a personal cheque.
John. A local Historian, is well known for his considerable collection of local photographs, newspaper cuttings and World War 2 memorabilia. A selection of his photographs are displayed every year in his very popular marquee, at the Normanton Gala. His other interests embrace Geology, Mineralogy and the metal mining industry on which he treated us to a very interesting talk on the mining of Gold in the UK, particularly in Scotland, where there was a Klondyke style gold rush in the 1860’s and in North Wales where he was directly involved in the management of Gold mining at the Clogau mine near Dolgelly, many years ago. Rotarian Ian Dransfield, on behalf of our members, thanked John for his very interesting talk, mentioning that he had first addressed our club members in 1974 and again in 1991. (a further three photographs can be seen below).
