Welcome to our annual Presentation Evening! This is the evening when we take the opportunity to recognise the academic and other achievements of so many of our students, including our leavers, who did so well in their final exams. Entertainment Forza del Destino played by Alex McGrane G.Verdi Presentation of Special Awards by Mrs Ryan Gwladys Williams Award Character and Personality Lydia Nagle, who was ‘charming, bubbly and full of fun, an absolute pleasure to teach’ . Tim Stephens Award Character and Personality Philip Penny: ‘Talented, intelligent and a one man comedy roadshow! He livened up many lessons with his keen wit and valuable and insightful observations’ . Lee Nicol Award Outstanding Personal Achievement Georgia Hibbert, who showed resilience and perseverance during her time at Hillside. Luke Eccleston Eco Award Max Carson, who designed and made his own eco-island as part of a science homework project; Tthe eco-island was built with excellent craftsmanship and was complete with a working solar panel and wind turbine on it. Archimedes Award for Scientific Enquiry Hagan McGowan, whose love of science and thirst for knowledge has been evident since he came here on his Year 6 visit! Citizenship Award, sponsored by John Moores University James Howell, who gave up over 80 hours of his own time to help organize activities in our primary schools and the community. Contribution to the Life of the School Fern Hodgson, who gave up many hours of her time to help at after school events in particular to work with older people in our Silver Surfers club and Joseph Jones, a peer supporter who also entertained us with his musical skills on many occasions. Laetitia Shemilt Award for Kindness Declan Williams, who took another student ‘under his wing’ and looked after him throughout his time at school. John Phillips Award for Cultural Awareness Jake Henderson, for his commitment to and enthusiasm for the international events hosted here. Outstanding Sporting Achievement (Girls) Sophie Balshaw, an excellent netballer who achieved maximum marks in her GCSE PE netball assessment. She represented the school and consistently performed to a high standard; she also plays for a local club. She excelled in rock climbing, trampolining, rounders and badminton. Outstanding Sporting Achievement (Boys) James Howell, who is an exceptionally talented footballer and golfer. He represented Sefton in football and is very able across a range of sports including badminton, basketball and table tennis. He also showed excellent skills as a sports leader.
Performing Arts Special Award Awarded to Michael Latham, a dedicated performer who gave up hours of his own time to rehearse and perform. Headteacher’s Award: These students represent the best of Hillside; they are decent, hardworking young people who have been a pleasure to teach. Many names were discussed in the selection process and we are sorry that they could not all be honoured here tonight. Alumni News ‘The Class of 200 9 ’ At school we often wonder what happens to our students after they leave. Many, of course, have younger brothers and sisters at school who keep us updated and we sometimes hear interesting snippets ‘on the grapevine’. We were delighted when three ex students got in touch to let us know what they were up to. Jade Quinn After Jade left Hillside she gained A levels in Psychology, Sociology, French and English then went on to University where she gained a BA(Hons) in Sociology with Childhood and Youth Services. She is now studying for a BSc in Health and Social Care and her ambition is to be a Social Worker. She said “Hillside opened many job opportunities for me. French and Spanish were my favourite subjects and I thought I would I would pursue them but in the end I have chosen a different career path” Glen Wild Since Glen left school he has been involved in performing both on stage and television as well as a successful career as a Stand Up comedian on the North West comedy circuit. He came back to Hillside and had a chat with the GCSE drama students about the business and the best ways to get started which he said “was humbling”. He hopes to be taken on by a London based agent and plans to relocate to London soon for performing work. He said, “I have to give Mrs Carey-Shields a mention for introducing me to the business... If I ever make it in to Hollywood, she can take early retirement!“
