Philanthropy: Together, we can create a better future of health “ The Cumming School of Medicine is primed for transformation. As a community we need to support the leaders and innovators who can show us what a world-class, research-intensive medical school looks like, and what in turn, it means to be global leaders. The single best thing we can do to improve health care and health outcomes for Calgarians and beyond is to invest in health research .” - Bill Sembo, donor, community leader and volunteer
Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) Established in 2018 as the University of Calgary’s newest innovation and research centre within the Cumming School of Medicine
Uniqueness and leadership Access to wide range of data types Alberta Healthcare system with data in one place Integration of AHS within CHI — Direct Access to current data- analyze and access whole populations securely
Collaborations Alberta Health Services In-house AHS employees with direct access Rolling out Connect Care University of Alberta Collaborations with U of A researchers who are strong in Artificial Intelligence Alberta SPOR Support Unit SPOR platforms work together and are in both Edmonton and Calgary. Data platform is half in CHI and half in U of A
Distinction and Global Recognition Promoting global health using statistics, providing data techniques for implementation worldwide Global applicable products, refining and standardizing terminology for data collection One of four academic centres globally for classification of disease
Connect Care A single province wide EHR system in all AHS facilities Presents an incredibly unique opportunity AHS is looking to the CHI to help them know how to use this new data source
Impact: COVID-19 Use our direct AHS data access to build a COVID-19 tracker to aid policy decisions by the provincial and municipal government to inform evidence-based policies. CHI’s close relationship with Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services as well as the University’s infrastructure allowed the COVID Task Force to get a front-facing, accessible tracker live in less than week. The Centre for Health Informatics plans to use the unique position it is in to continue projects to help inform the public
COVID Response Tracker https://www.chi-csm.ca/ The CHI-CSM COVID-19 Response aims to answer three main questions: 1. What does the current COVID-19 crisis look like across provinces 2. How is Canada doing compared to other countries? 3. Are policy changes making a difference in ‘flattening the curve’?
Data Informs Policy The COVID-19 tracker created by the team at CHI shows the unique position CHI is in to impact the community Accessible, current health data and expert data scientists are vital for the health of the community and for the government to make evidence-based policy decisions This not only impacts patients but also changes the health system itself
Wrap up Thank you and questions “ Using the outstanding health data we have access to in Alberta, we are having a huge impact on quality of life through prevention and treatment of disease. Big data-driven decisions will change the future of health care .” - Marcello Tonelli, Associate Vice President of Health Research, University of Calgary
