Pitch and Loudness By: Chase Lenhart How High or Low Something Is How Loud or Soft Something Is
What is Pitch? Pitch is how high or low something is. It comes from the Greek mathematician Pythagoras who found that a longer string makes lower pitch than a shorter string. How thick, thin, more relaxed, and tight something is affects their pitch.
What is Volume? Volume is how loud or soft a sound is. The amount of energy in a sound wave depends on how loud or soft it is. You can increase the volume by vibrating more of the surface. A loud sound has more energy than a soft sound and has a taller sound wave.
How do you Measure Pitch and Volume Pitch is measured by a oscilloscope. The machine takes a picture of the sound waves. It let's you compare and contrast the sound waves. Frequency is measured in units called hertz. Volume is measured by also an oscilloscope. Volume is measured in units called decibels.
High Pitch vs. Low Pitch Let's say we have a string. If the string is short it vibrates faster and has a higher pitch. If the string is longer it produces a lower pitch. Low Pitch High Pitch
Loud Volume vs. Soft Volume Let's say we have a rubber band. If you pluck the rubber band harder then normal it's louder. How loud or soft the sound depends on how much energy is in the sound waves. You can also increase the volume by making more of the surface vibrate. Loud
