For instance, it may revolve around a type of work, a theme, or one or more characters. In all cases, a number must have one unit. The average duration is 8 to 12 minutes. A number starts with a short introduction. The artist only has a few seconds to convince the audience that the presentation is worth watching and enjoying. A series of routines ensues, which must follow a logical progression from simple to more complex, as in French saying C'est de plus fort en plus fort, comme chez Nicolet. Lastly comes the finale, which is the number’s natural conclusion and culmination. Reference [translation]: Denis, Dominique (2001).
