Phonics Screening Check information for parents 2019
This screening test was introduced by the DfE in 2012 as a means to as assess ess pu pupi pil l ab ability ity to de o decode ode wo words ds. • Year 1 and any eligible Year 2 pupils • Summer Term ; week beginning June 10 th 2019 • Based on phases 2 – 5 of the DfE ‘Letter and Sounds’ guidance • 40 words, real and nonsense words • 1-1 with the teacher • ‘met the expected standard’, ‘not met the expected standard’; this will be shared with parents via the end of year report
Real and nonsense words are used, to allow the children to demonstrate their decoding skills.
Examples of words taken from the 2018 check: skap flisp twice delay blorn braint gloo modern meft scrid m saucers veems splote turn charming mode
Children are encouraged to blend the sounds together to read the word. E.g. sh – o – p shop m – i- d – n – igh – t midnight b - r – a – k – e brake qu – ee – t queet s – au- c – er saucer
This screening check is designed to be informal, relaxed and fun. (“Quiz time!” ) It is designed specifically to check pupil progress in phonics and their ability to decode words. It is not a test of ‘reading’!
What can you do at home? • Read, read, read! Keep reading with your child and talking with them about what they are reading. Enjoy reading together! • Look at decodable words and help your child use their phonics skills to work them out. • Help them to recognise alternative graphemes for different phonemes i.e. the different ways we can spell a sound, when they are reading and writing. • Keep calm and carry on. This is not something to worry about!
