Phonics Reception Reading Blogging Maths Fun and Achieve!
Phonics In Reception we teach phonics daily. Phonics is knowledge of the alphabet and letter sounds. Through teaching phonics, we give the children the ability to begin to read and write. Each letter has its own action to help the children remember the sound. Fun and Achieve!

Segmenting and Blending Segmenting and Blending are reversible key phonics skills. Segmenting consists of breaking down the words into their sounds to spell. For example: cat c-a-t Blending consists of building words from sounds to read. For example: c-a-t cat Fun and Achieve!
Obb and Bob • Say the word in sound talk • If it is a real word give it to Bob but if it is a nonsense word give it to Obb. • Year 1 Phonics Screening Fun and Achieve!
Tricky Words On your table you will find a list of high frequency words, some of which are called ‘tricky words’. These are words that you cannot sound out and the children need to learn by sight. We do lots of activities in our phonics sessions to help the children with their tricky words. Fun and Achieve!
A Phonics Lesson • Revisit and Review – Go through sounds taught in previous sessions. • Teach – Introduce new sound or tricky word. • Practise – play games to support blending and segmenting of the new sound. • Apply – use all previously learned phonics knowledge to help read/write captions and sentences.
Phonics at home • Practising letter formation. • Finding sounds in the environment. • Interactive Games – Phonics Play. • Playing I spy with different sounds. • Help to write shopping lists – initial sounds, final sounds etc.
Reading Books • When? • Reading Records Fun and Achieve!
Examples of parent’s comments • Mark read to page 6. He read very well, some of the pages were quite long. Some tricky words made him think such as ‘beautiful’. We were very pleased with his efforts. • Christine is using grammar and punctuation when reading out loud. We were very impressed with her use of expression when she saw an exclamation mark. • Jo used phonics to sound out words that she didn’t know like ‘scruffiest’ Fun and Achieve! Fun and Achieve!
Maths • White Rose Maths • Count, recognise and order numbers to 20 • Adding and taking away. • 2D and 3D shapes. • Size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money. Fun and Achieve!
Blogs We have a class blog which can be accessed through our school website. If you ever need the address for our class blog, you can find it on the Reception notice board. We use this to share ways you can support your child at home and to celebrate learning that has been going on in our classroom. Individual blogs. Fun and Achieve!
