LEARNING
Langua guage ge Arts ts This year we will be using a new language arts program, nonfiction selections, and novels from the adopted trade book list. These programs provide learning opportunities for students at all levels of reading. The e new CKLA A (Core e Knowledge wledge Langu guage age Arts) s) program combines reading and writing with rigorous text. The first unit focus is on personal narrative writing. Spelling lling Spelling words and tests are weekly, unless it is a short or atypical week. Words are high frequency spelling words, as well as content specific. Finally, students will be expected to use spelling lling referen ences ces consistently throughout the year. If a word is spelled correctly for them on the paper, then it should be copied correctly into the answers.
Personal Narratives Middle Ages Poetry Eureka! Inventions Geology The House on Mango Street (Fiction) American Revolution Treasure Island (Fiction)
Ma Math This year math will focus on the fourth grade objectives first. As students show mastery, instruction will be accelerated to include objectives from higher grades. Math homework will be given 2-3 days per week, and the work is due the day following its assignment unless otherwise noted. Soci cial l Studi dies es, , Sci cien ence ce, , and Health th In social studies our primary focus is Arizona history. VOLUNTEERS (______________________)
One volunteer opportunity that greatly benefits all teachers is the workroom volunteer. This help allows teachers to spend more time planning, because volunteers generously help with copying, laminating, binding, pencil sharpening, etc. Many of the dedicated volunteers have “graduated,” because their students have moved on to middle school, which leaves it very shorthanded at the moment. Training is given on the machines for those who need it, and then you can work as your schedule permits.
The DISCOVERoom is open tonight!!!Come Check us out!!! A place where kids can PLAY & EXPLORE during lunch recess. ∗ Earth & Space ∗ Engineering/Invention ∗ Electricity & Magnets ∗ Life Science, Chemistry, Geology ∗ Guest Presenters from ASU, SRP, & parents What We Need: • Parent/Grandparent/Community Member Volunteers to help supervise students in the room during lunch recess (approx 11:15am -12:45pm) • Volunteers to help with administrative tasks before/after school or at home • Supplies: new/gently used science kits, legos, snap circuits, marble runs, science toys • Sign up to volunteer with your teacher tonight! Stop by and see us!
Volunteers are needed to present the artwork lesson each month. It works best for our classroom schedule on Tuesday or Thursday near the end of the day. If we have several volunteers, no one person would have to commit to presenting every month. If you want to partner up with another parent for the lessons that has worked well too. If art is your specialty, and you would be willing to help in other classrooms that don’t have a volunteer, that would be appreciated too. Email me lgwilli liam@k am@kyren rene.or org with questions or to volunteer
