Manifesto Art does not exist to make people feel stupid, or out of the loop. It is not a secret language only for the elite. Art is a beautiful way of understanding, learning and expressing. Art is for everyone. It holds the power to inspire and to speak where other forms of communication fall short. Art likes to wear many hats, it can be healer; meeting us in our deepest darkest places, giving us a lens to understand and an opportunity to stay or to go forward. Art can be a child; reminding you of all the places and moments you forgot, making you feel ridiculous and giddy and just a little more free. Art can be the best friend who shows you what you really didn't want to know, but needed to. Art can be the hospitable grandmother who welcomes everyone in and makes sure no one leaves hungry. Art also can be the coach who pushes you past your comfort zone and inspires you to keep running. Art wears a lot of hats, and it is in this that I see God mirrored in art. In its ability to meet you were you are and walk with you through life. Creativity is woven into our very beings. Made in the image of God, the ultimate creator, we have a desire in our souls to understand and make sense of ourselves and our world through the means of art. There is a call to create, art is a part of us.
Themes and questions • creating an immersive experience • how do we understand ourselves and each other • learning about myself through the process of art making • childlike, imaginative, exploratory, curious • hidden darkness • vulnerability • honesty • inquiry • incorporating poetry • how can I make the viewer feel, understand and think deeply • how can I engage viewers and make them feel welcome
Where do I want to go next? So what does all of this mean for the future of art making for Sierra? Where will I go next? I hope to push further into explorations of multimedia large scale installation work. To continue pursing art as a way of understanding and making beautiful the world around us. I want to ask more questions, and push the boundaries of art into the realms of social engagement and inquiry. I want to make more art that takes viewers on a journey and brings them into a process of exploring their own experiences, lives, dreams and aspirations. I hope to help bridge the gaps of misunderstanding by creating art that is needed, that makes sense, and that gives life.
