  2. § Eligibility for Gifted programming requires 2 things: § Cognitive Ability and “Learning Strengths” § Cognitive Ability § The student must demonstrate cognitive strength by scoring 130 or higher on an IQ test, where a Standard Score of 100 is exactly Average. At PV , we are flexible with how this score is obtained based on the individual strengths of the student. For example, we teach our students that good learners go back and double check work and take their time to think through a problem. Students who are being evaluated for Gifted services often take those lessons to heart and become meticulous. This can impact their performance on the Processing Speed portions of an IQ test, and possibly bring down their overall score. To adjust for this, when it’s appropriate we calculate something called a General Ability Index, which is an IQ score that does not factor in things like speed. We don’t want to ‘penalize’ students for applying what we’ve taught them.

  3. § Learning Strengths - Learning strengths can be thought of as characteristics that predict success in a Gifted program, or that demonstrate Gifted services would be a good match for the student. There is no set number of these that must be present, but the more the student has the more likely they are to find success with Gifted programming. Examples are: § Strong rates of acquisition and retention (do they learn quickly, and do they remember over long periods of time) § Advanced achievement, performance, or expertise in one or more academic areas § Demonstration of higher-level thinking skills § Academic creativity § Strong leadership skills § Intense academic interest § Strong communication skills § Foreign language aptitude § Technology expertise

  6. § High School Example: § Gifted student this school year is pursuing Dual Enrollment Calculus class equivalent to AP Calculus BC this year … Next year we have a possibility of 11 student due to MCL. § PVIS Example: § Gifted students were five students to take Algebra a few years ago and now PVIS has 36 learners taking Algera and Algbra II due to MCL. § Elementary Example: § Many district opened the Oratory Competition up to their Gifted Programs, we opened it up to all students.

  7. § K-6 th : Learning Lab – with hands on learning and extension § Full time facilitator K-8 th § 7 th -12 th : Discussions with families on Gifted Programming and if MCL programming aligns to their enrichment or acceleration needs or need for Gifted.
