  1. PAT BI – A Granular Database Russell Bowden Manager Primary Health Workforce Support

  2. Why we needed PAT BI • PHT has a wealth of clinical and data analysis expertise • Public Health Physicians They needed their own data interrogation platform which • Epidemiologists allowed granular, longitudinal analysis of unique patients across practices • Data Analysis • Primary Health Information Network established, which PAT BI supports through • Detailed primary care data analysis and presentation • Deep dives into areas of need from primary health data • In depth conversations with practices • Not just about quality improvement (needs analysis equally important)

  3. How is it used?

  4. Challenges • Making sure the infrastructure can keep up • Making sure we can plan for new functionality and release within PenCS release cycle (process) • Limitations in what’s available • Co morbidity information • Only a restricted view of MBS items (a subset, not all) • Prescribing information was initially limited for those with a Mental Health Diagnosis • Free text vs coded data • Quality of GP data (a general problem for all PHNs and practices)

  5. Success • For the first time we can have a detailed look into Primary Care Data • The conversations we’ve been able to have with GPs • Asking better questions • Up to this point in time, everyone thought getting GP data was the end goal • Looking at the data in this way has allowed us to understand where the gaps are and the questions, we need to answer e.g prescribing information for those with mental health diagnosis

  6. Would we recommend to others? • Yes, we would but: • Make sure you have the right expertise and clinical and analytical support, (data interrogation and understanding what you’re looking at) • Make sure you have scalable infrastructure • Make sure you have the support team which can act on what you’re seeing in the data

  7. Thanks to PenCS
