Partnerships - in the ITO/adult literacy and numeracy world
A personal perspective I am a personification of partnerships and what they mean in practice Every morning I have to remember which workplace I am going to
Some thoughts - and reasons why We don’t have all the pieces of the puzzle Other players have skills that we don’t have Other players have access to learners/funds/ sectors that we do not have access to. Partnerships offer a lot of chances to learn new stuff and grow new skills. Partnerships provide opportunities to reflect on our own practices and take satisfaction in some things that we do rather well.
Some more thoughts The government is very keen on partnerships – and they actively promote them. (JVAPs) They have a wee way to go in practicing what they preach – but that is another story
Partnerships – in practice The Ako Aotearoa NPF Dyslexia project – has 5 partners - Primary ITO - The Skills Organisation - Service IQ - Whitireia Polytechnic - Capital Training Limited All partners are linked by a contract with Ako Aotearoa
JVAPs* * Joint Venture, Amalgamation Projects. The Skills Organisation has been involved in a number of JVAPs
Northland JVAP – “Set for Life” Joint venture between Skills Org, Primary ITO, North Tec and Te Matarau Education Trust. Working with students from a number of Northland Sec Schools Focus is on improving the pathways from school to meaningful employment for a cohort of school students
More about “Set for Life” Programme keeps learner at the centre of all delivery. Focus is on developing strong foundation skills, including L+N, Financial capability and Health and Safety. The programme allows partners to test new ways of doing things in response to challenges faced A lot of other subsidiary partners – like Northland Inc. and The local Chamber of Commerce
The mechanics A medium to long term initiative. Months and years – as opposed to weeks Best to be governed by a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Somebody must have the specific responsibility to manage the partnership – Project leader It helps to have some sort of governance group/advisory group sitting above the active partners
Conclusions Partnerships are the way forward – especially if you want to do something over and above the regular work we do. Inevitably there will be a report at the conclusion and that is a wonderful way of promoting what we do. Partnerships are a great way of generating good news stories. Once you have successfully navigated one – you increase the chances of follow up partnership arrangements. You have a successful track record. If anybody is up for a partnership project – talk to me.
