Green Partnerships Local Partnerships for Greener Cities and Regions Project Meeting in Cyprus 10 th – 15 th June 2014 Pilot case: Biomass Burner for heating water at Lakatamia Municipal Swimming Pools � 2 LAG Meetings: Sept. 2013, Jan. 2014 � LAG Members : - State administrations (Energy Service-Ministry of Energy, Environment Department & Agriculture Departure -Ministry of Agriculture) - Other public and semi-public authorities (Environment Commissioner, ARI, CEA) - Third sector organisations(CFEEO, Municipal Youth Council) - Mayor, City Secretary, Environment Services Lakatamia Municipality � Start-end date of pilot implementation: Jan 2014 – May 2015 Green Partnerships 2 Lakatamia 10 – 15 June 2014

  2. Targets and Actions so far… � Starting point: Sustainable Energy Action Plan. � Solution: To exploit large quantities of biomass at L.M. - 2100tons/annum- to promote RSE. New cooperation established with local stakeholders. � Targets: - Cost and energy savings by reducing electricity and oil bills ~€100,000 p.a. - To promote private- public partnerships. - Local public. Continuous access to municipal swimming-pools. � Key actions taken so far: Feasibility studies by Cyprus Energy Agency completed 2 Capacity building workshops on Biomass and Solar Energy 2 LAG workshops Ecological Festival- distribution of leaflets and information to locals Organisation of Europe Energy Day Seminar for the public Green Partnerships 3 Lakatamia 10 – 15 June 2014 Barriers and Benefits � Barriers to the implementation of the project: - Timely access to project funding - Regulatory framework – procedures - Lack of sufficient experience in the RES Biomass sector in Cyprus for ‘industrial’ purposes. - Lack of technical aspects knowledge by Municipal staff – need for greater information and training. � Benefits for the community: - Increased awareness and promotion of RSEs - Continuous free access to the Municipal swimming-pools during winter - Readily available wood-chips (energy and cost efficiency) to be bought from the Municipality?? � Lessons learnt - To consult as many energy specialists/researchers prior to private owners involvement. - To maintain clear facts about costs and Municipality’s financial potential, to avoid Green Partnerships lengthly discussions and tension. 4 Lakatamia 10 – 15 June 2014
