Parting Promises John 14.15-26

‘ Jesus ’ Farewell discourse ’ (John Chapters 13-17) • Disciples to prepare Upper room to celebrate feast of the Passover • Jesus gets up, takes a towel and washes the disciples feet • Jesus takes the bread and wine, saying it represents his body and blood • Jesus say ’ s, he ’ s going away and they couldn ’ t come- he was going to his father
Reading: John 14: 15-26 (NIV) ‘ If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another counsellor to be with you forever- the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither see ’ s him or knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him. ’ Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, ‘ But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world? ’ Jesus replied, “ If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. ”

In verse 16: ‘ Another Counsellor ’ in the original the word another is (al-loss) and means one besides, another of the same kind, put it this way it means- One besides me and in addition to me but one just like me, he will do in my absence what I would do if I were physically present with you!
3 Scriptures that relate John 3: 5-7 Jesus talking with Nicodemus “ I tell you the truth, no-one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, you must be born again ” Genesis 2: 7 “ The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being …” John 20: 19b-22 Jesus came and stood among them and said “ Peace be with you! ” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said ‘ Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. And with that he breathed on them and said “ Receive the Holy Spirit … . ”
John 1: 29-34 “ The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him and said “ Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one I meant when I said, ‘ A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me ’ I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptising with water was that he might be revealed to Israel. Then John gave this testimony, ‘ I saw the Spirit come down as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptise with water told me, ‘ The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptise with the Holy Spirit ’ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.
Acts 1:4-5 “ On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘ Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised which you have heard me speak about. For John baptised you with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit ’
Acts 2: 1-4 When the day of Penetcost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a blowing of a violent wind came from Heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed like tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Parting Promises John 14: 15-26 … and so in just over 6 weeks from the promises given the disciples not only received Holy Spirit but were also baptised (fully immersed) in him!
