“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt
Self-Concept Three key elements Self-image: The view you ● have of yourself "The individual's belief about himself or herself, including the Self-esteem: How much ● person's attributes and who value you place on yourself and what the self is.” To be aware of oneself is to have a Ideal-self: What you wish concept of oneself. ● you were really like Roy Baumeister, Social Psychologist, Florida State University
Self-Esteem The extent to which we like, accept or approve of ourselves, or how much we value ourselves. Self-esteem always involves a degree of evaluation. High Self-Esteem Low Self-Esteem Confidence in our own Lack of confidence ● ● abilities Want to be/look like ● Self-acceptance someone else ● Not worrying about what Always worrying what ● ● others think others might think Optimism Pessimism ● ●
Low Self-Esteem the way th ay it it is is... .. Poor Self-image = limited self- awareness; students really don’t know who they are Unclear Ideal Self = manipulated view of ideal self or “who they should be” as defined by their perception of other students, media promoted stereotypes, and how they are defined by summative assessments like tests, grades and praise Poor Self-esteem – based on lack of information and misinformation about themselves, they are vulnerable to outside manipulation. This is compounded if they lack self-regulation, and therefore are vulnerable to stress, anxiety and depression
Here’s a strategy for how to build ild se self lf-esteem It comes down to three basic questions: What, How, Why
Get specific Build Self-Image “the WHAT” - Who am I? What am I feeling? What am I thinking? ● self-concept Define Ideal Self “The WHY” - Who do I want to be? What do I want to contribute? ● Action to develop Self-Esteem ● “The HOW ” - Supportive relationships, Growth Mindset, Intrinsic Motivation, Optimism, decision making & emotional regulation
The challenges a student faces can be like climbing Mt. Everest... ...with SEL & Character, a student builds self- concept to “knock it down to size”
