Overview of the Input-Output Tables The Canadian Input-Output Framework represent the most detailed accounting of the Canadian economy available • Ideal for studying the structure of the Canadian economy More accurate but less timely • The 2010 IO Tables will only be released on November 8 th , 2013 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 4
Overview of the Input-Output Tables Based on two sets of interrelated accounts • Commodity Account Allows for the study of the supply and disposition of goods and services Supply = Demand • Industry Account allows for the study of the commodity composition of the output of industries and the complete cost of production Inputs = Outputs Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 5
Overview of the Input-Output Tables Consists of three tables • Output Table Shows the output or production of industries • Input Table Shows the inputs or purchases of goods and services by industries Shows the valued added or GDP of industries • Final Demand Table Shows the final consumption of goods and services by: – Households (personal expenditures) – Industries (GFCF) – Government (net current expenditures) – Trade (exports less imports) Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 6
Overview of the Input-Output Tables The Canadian Input-Output framework is an important component of the Canadian System of National Accounts • Highly integrated with the Income and Expenditure Accounts • Level of integration increases with each historical revision Introduction of a common SNA PE classification Matching asset detail and definitions for gross fixed capital formation The National Input-Output tables go back to 1961 The Provincial Input-Output tables go back to 1997 Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 7
Classifications of the Input-Output System Three classification systems • Input-Output Industry Classification (IOIC) • Input-Output Commodity Classification (IOCC) • Input-Output Final Demand Classifications (IOFDC) Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 8
Classifications of the Input-Output System Input-Output Industry Classification (IOIC) • Found in the Output and Inputs Tables • Based on 2007 North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) • See document IO Industry classification structure and concordance, 2009.xls Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 9
Classifications of the Input-Output System Input-Output Commodity Classification (IOCC) • Found in all three of the Input-Output Tables • Based on the North American Products Classification System (NAPCS) • See document IO Commodity classification structure and concordance, 2009.xls Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 10
Classifications of the Input-Output System Input-Output Final Demand Classifications (IOFDC) • Found only in the Final Demand Table • Contains the final demand components of the Final Demand Tables, which includes: Household consumption expenditures Gross fixed capital formation NPISH and Government current consumption expenditures Inventories Exports and imports • See document IO Final demand classification structure and concordance, 2009.xls Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 11
Classifications of the Input-Output System Classifications are hierarchical, with 5 levels of aggregation • DC – Detailed confidential level Working level of the IO Tables • D – Detailed level Available to the public for the National IO Tables • L97 – Link to 1997 level Level of detail for the historical series going back to 1997 At the National Level only Work has yet to be done Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 12
Classifications of the Input-Output System • L61 – Link to 1961 level Level of detail for the historical series going back to 1961 At the National Level only Work has yet to be done • S – Summary Level of detail for the provincial IO Tables Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 13
Impact of SNA 2012 Revision • 2009 and onwards are very different than the 2008 and prior New IO classifications New SNA concepts Revised data sets • 2009 and 2008 are not comparable • Historical series is not yet available • See document Modernization of the Input-Output Tables Statistics Canada • Statistique Canada 09/10/2013 14
