Optimizing Transport Systems: The Role of ISO/TC204 William Johnson, Chair Canadian Advisory Committee for Standards Council of Canada ISO/TC204 ITS Canada Annual Conference Quebec City, Quebec June 18, 2012
Overview of Presentation What are “Standards” ISO Standards ISO Technical Committee 204 Structure / Participants Structure / Participants Work Program / Examples Priorities for Canada Conclusions / Participation
What are Standards? Standards Council of Canada (SCC) Defines standards as “documents that describe essential characteristics of products, services, essential characteristics of products, services, systems” Such as: performance, reliability, safety, consistency, compatibility, widely accepted guidance, safety and effectiveness. 3
What are Standards? Standards development has 2 parts: (1) getting interested parties together to develop the standard (finding technical solutions), and solutions), and (2) application of the standard (finding a common interest to use the same standard). 4
What are Standards? SCC Standards profile: Standards development process must be voluntary Adoption of the standards is market driven Most effective where the need for interoperability or quality assurance is quite high Process works where there is expert knowledge, feasible concepts, general acceptance of common practices and the need for compatibility, within a coherent community of interest 5
ISO Standards ISO – International Organization for Standards Organisation internationale des normes Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland Members are National Standards Bodies Members are National Standards Bodies Examples: Standards Council of Canada (SCC) American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) 164 members
