North Devon Sunrise A community support organisation, primarily focusing on the needs of people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Communities in Northern Devon (North Devon Sunrise, 2013a)
How North Devon Sunrise Started and the Main Issues in North Devon Research from the Community Safety Mapping Project, in 2009, found various • issues in BME communities in North Devon and then Sunrise started as a social group (Safer North Devon, 2010) Members started asking for help with a range of issues • Sunrise now has 30 trained volunteers and three part-time paid staff, as a • result of a volunteer training project funded by Awards for All in 2011 The main issue in North Devon is its rural location; people find it difficult to • reach the appropriate support services, as the majority of BME support is based in bigger cities like Exeter and Plymouth As we’re a local organisation, we can reach the local BME communities and • people can find us easily
Areas of our Work • Accessing Local Services • BME Complex Care Needs • Domestic Abuse • Housing • Homophobia • Physical and Mental Health • Welfare • Social, Cultural, Religious and Language Barriers (North Devon Sunrise, 2013b)
We provide support to... • Victims of Domestic Abuse and Homophobia • BME Elderly People and Families • People with Disabilities and Learning Disabilities • Isolated Individuals/Communities (hard-to-reach) • People with Physical and Mental Health Issues • Information and Support Seekers • Victims of Racism/Discrimination • Oversees Students • Migrant Workers • Asylum Seekers (North Devon Sunrise, 2013c)
We work with... • The NHS (Northern Devon Healthcare Trust, 2013) • Councils (Devon County Council, 2013. North Devon District Council, 2013. Barnstaple Town Council, 2013) • The Police (Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, 2013) • Schools (North Devon Sunrise, 2013d) • Mental Health Services (NHS Depression and Anxiety Service, 2013) • GP Surgeries • Social Services • The Fire Services (Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, 2013) • Other Front-line Service Providers
Sunrise and the Big Society • Lack of focus on social justice and inequalities • Concern regarding Localism and Big Society • Focus on neighbourhoods (the building blocks of localism) is problematic as they’re not always inclusive and BME communities go beyond neighbourhoods • Without equality standards and safeguards there will be unequal standards of access and outcome; • There will be a difference in standards between areas, especially rural areas like ours where BME communities are in a very small minority
