Focus on the Future - Suggested School Models Where are we going? EL (Expeditionary Learning) School Model: EL Education is a comprehensive school reform and school development model for elementary, middle, and high schools. The Core Practice Benchmarks describe EL Education in practice: what teachers, students, school leaders, families, and other partners do in fully implemented EL Education schools. The five core practices—learning expeditions, active pedagogy, school culture and character, leadership and school improvement, and structures—work in concert and support one another to promote high achievement through active learning, character growth, and teamwork. EL Education is a model for whole school reform that partners with schools to provide professional development, curriculum planning resources, and school structures to boost student engagement, character, and achievement. Founded in the traditions of Outward Bound, EL Education enhances instructional practices and instills a positive school culture by emphasizing: ● A rigorous and engaging curriculum; ● An active, inquiry-based pedagogy; and ● A school culture that fosters compassion and collaboration. Please see the EL design principles: http://eleducation.org/resources/design-principles http://eleducation.org/what-we-offer/whole-school-transformation El Education has 3 Dimensional of learning for student achievement (EL vision of student achievement): ● Mastery of knowledge, skills and concepts ● Character ● High expectations for all – high quality of work. http://eleducation.org/resources/el-dimensions-of-student-achievement-in-el-schools
Focus on the Future - Suggested School Models Where are we going? PBL School Model: Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge. In Gold Standard PBL, Essential Project Design Elements. The Buck Institute for Education (BIE) is a mission driven not-for-profit organization committed to expanding the effective use of Project Based Learning. Project Based Learning’s time has come. The experience of thousands of teachers across all grade levels and subject areas, backed by research, confirms that PBL is an effective and enjoyable way to learn - and develop deeper learning competencies required for success in college, career, and civic life. Why are so many educators across the United States and around the world interested in this teaching method? The answer is a combination of timeless reasons and recent developments. IB School Model - limited information has been researched at this time, but it has been presented to staff. This could be a real possibility at a K-8 model, but we wonder about the 9-12 component and maintaining a seamless, educational experience for all of our students.
Focus on the Future - Suggested School Models Where are we going? ● Examples of School Models
Questions for Specification for our Focus on the Future Teacher Fears/Questions from 1/3/2017 meeting ● If we change the school model (e.g. IB or K-8), when will that be announced ● If we change the school model (e.g. IB or K-8), where will the FTE come from to do the new model? (we should share with them that we could potentially funnel FTE from existing programs into the new school model programs. E.g. we no longer offer science, so those 2 FTE go to the new IB program) ● Can we look at a differential staffing in regard to FTE? Block scheduling, a true K8, 9-12 ● When will teachers know if they will be displaced, because of the new school model? ● When will teacher training happen? E.g. Can kids start in Sept. and teachers do three weeks of training to learn how to do the new school model? Or, a 4-day week and Fridays are in-service days? ● Professional development is essential in a new school model, will we have the opportunity for thoughtful and complete training? ● Is there support for a different school schedule for our new model, i.e. 4 day a week or week long expeditions? ● What are the options for shared FTE, resources and school models? ● What is the capital dollar amount for an innovative school model? Suggestion is a K8, 9th-12th with CTE options. ● Is there a limitation on the global experiences we can give our students? ● We want to think outside the box - is this an option? ●
