How are tracks and expectations defined? • Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) Policy – all KS campuses – http://www.kansasregents.org/board_policy_manual – Definition of tracks, approval of new tracks – Other policies like post tenure review, social media policy – Tenure and clinical scholar track changes April 2017 • Handbook for Faculty and Staff – KUMC campus – Governs activities across the med center (all 3 schools) – Major revision in 2016; 130 pages instead of 264!! • SOM specific criteria – Interpretation of handbook; evaluation by ca career le level – Domain Guide gives examples of expectations at each career level – Matrix of requirements by track and rank; also available – Link on SOM Faculty Affairs and Development website
Basis for faculty activity evaluation - three buckets Three areas of faculty activity are evaluated in the promotion and tenure process: • • Teach eaching ing (very broadly defined, includes formal and one-on-one, bedside) • Res esearch/Schol earch/Scholarshi arship (clinical and bench research, funding, publications) • Se Servi vice ce (patient care and professional/academic service) For each category, both qualitative and quantitative measures are used in the • evaluation (e.g. RVUs for clinical service) Accomplishments in each category are given an overall rating based on the career level • achieved by the applicant (early, mid, established career) There are different career level expectations in the three activity areas for each faculty • track, and for each rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor) within the tracks Career progress specific to each field is best addressed in letters from: • The department chair • The departmental P&T committee • The chair of the secondary department • Division director (if applicable) • Center or Institute director •
Summary of Tracks – activity expectations • Tenure Track – substantial contributions in all three domains • Clinical Scholar Track – substantial contributions in 2 of 3 – Clinician Educator pathway – clinical service and education – Clinician Investigator pathway – clinical service and research • *Clinical Track – primarily clinical service • *Research Track – primarily research activities • *Educator Track – requires 70% effort in teaching • Affiliate Track – located at one of several affiliate institutions • *Volunteer Appointments – unpaid by KUMC * Denotes modified title, e.g. “Clinical Assistant Professor”
What are the expectations for promotion? • Tenure track – substantial contributions in all categories • To achieve te tenure ure, must reach mid career in teaching and research, show trajectory to achieve full professor in the future • For full professor, must reach established career achievement in tw two areas, mid in the remaining • International/National recognition required for full professor • Clinical Scholar Track – substantial contributions in 2 of 3 areas of activity, one of which is Clinical service. The other depends on your additional activities: • Clinician Educator Path - teaching • Clinician Investigator Path – research/scholarship • Research, clinical or educator track – substantial contributions in your primary area of activity . Some additional contributions to one of the other areas is expected
Career level expectations – Clinical Scholar track: Promotion to Associate Professor: • • Mid career in service (patient care, professional and academic service) • Mid career in teaching (Educator) or Research/Scholarship (Investigator) • Early career in remaining Promotion to Professor: • • Established career in service (patient care, professional and academic service) • Established career in teaching (Educator) or Research Scholarship (Investigator) • Mid career in remaining Career level expectations – Single emphasis track: Promotion to Associate Professor: • • Mid career in primary area (research, teaching or clinical/professional service) • Early career in one of the two other areas Promotion to Professor: • • Established career in primary area (research, teaching or clinical/professional service) • Mid career in one of the two other areas
