Nassau County Psychological Association Nassau Psychological Services Institute Adelphi University Derner Institute Present “Mindfulness for You, Mindfulness for Your Patients, Mindfulness Applications for School Populations” Gabrielle Chiaramonte, Ph.D. Barbara Fisher, Ph.D. Anthony Pantaleno, Ph.D. Dorothy Ahl, M.S., Ed.S. Sunday, November 6, 2016 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM Presentation followed by Question & Answer Period as Time Allows Sign in will begin at 8:00 AM ABOUT THE PRESENTATION Interest in mindfulness meditation has increased exponentially since Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn developed the 8 week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course in 1979 that has been featured in countless media segments and hundreds of scientific research articles. Mindfulness meditation as taught in the MBSR course is evidence-based and has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, improve coping with chronic illness and pain, and increase a sense of balance and well-being. Moreover, research has found that health care providers who practice mindfulness meditation have decreased stress and burnout and improved communication with patients. Given its effectiveness, mindfulness meditation has become increasingly popular across psychotherapeutic orientations. This workshop will include an educational component as well as an experiential component. Participants will learn about the trend of using mindfulness in therapy, get an overview of the MBSR course, and learn about current research. They will also get a first-hand experience in 2-3 mindfulness meditation practices. At the conclusion of the presentation, attendees will be able to: 1. Name three benefits of developing their own mindfulness practice for self-care 2. Describe research supporting the clinical value of mindfulness practices in improving mental and physical health 3. Develop an experiential understanding of mindfulness practice and the common experiences faced by new practitioners 4. Articulate the elements of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course. 5. Provide patients with a rationale for the use of mindfulness practices in session. Access resources to develop their own mindfulness practice as well as resources for incorporating mindfulness with patients 6. 7. Describe several applications of mindfulness in school settings and how these may be implemented.
