In our inclusive, portfolio-based school, our students develop their passion, commitment to learning, habits of mind, and essential skills. Our students will become college graduates who work to create positive change and a more democratic and just society. 2

Students must start the work of developing habits of mind and essential skills before they reach high school. • Researchers also state that the highest level of mathematics one studies in secondary school has the strongest continuing influence on bachelor's degree completion . • This year, only 13 grade 8 non exam school students successfully completed Algebra 1 . BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Why Expand? • Urgency! • Guaranteed trajectory to Advanced Coursework in high school and increased selective college acceptances. • More access to high quality seats. • Offering a Pilot Model for other BPS High Schools to model. • Fewer transitions for families, preventing loss to the district. • New Mission becomes a more fiscally viable school. 6

New Mission strives to further close achievement & opportunity gaps – Connecting more students with Advanced Placement program – Offering access to successful school to more students Middle school expansion will further close achievement & opportunity gaps – Earlier identification of skills and proficiency gaps  earlier interventions – Early and strong preparation for rigorous high school academics – More families accessing New Mission’s program 7

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Integrating 7 th Graders is Key to Success We believe that several key initiatives will ensure that NMHS culture remains strong and 7th graders are successfully integrated: • “Honors for All” programming • Deep preparation work on school design and curriculum • Extended Learning Time Opportunities – Mandatory Summer Program for new students – Saturday School – Afterschool Titan Learning Centers • Advisory Model - Peer Mentorship • 1-1 Chromebooks – Personalized Learning • Rights of Passage programming for young men and women 9

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS New Mission’s Growth Proposal 160 student expansion – adding 7 th and 8 th grades • Expansion over two years: – 2016 - 2017: Planning Year (320 students - no enrollment change) – 2017 - 2018: +80 7th graders (400 students total) – 2018 - 2019: +80 7th graders (480 students total) • Expansion will take place in existing facility via minor physical updates to expand number of usable classrooms • Middle School academic and extracurricular program will be aligned with existing HS programs to strengthen transition to HS • Ultimate goal is to provide earlier and broader access to NMHS’s program to more families and students 10
