KALRO’s mandate is to: v Promote, streamline, co-ordinate and regulate research in crops, livestock, genetic resources, biotechnology and animal diseases v Expedite equitable access to research information, resources and technologies and v promote the application of research findings and developed technologies in the field of agriculture and livestock

  4. Constraints to Driving Genetic Gain Biotic and Limited range of Poor abiotic stresses; products; unorganized mechanization marketing system phenotyping Limited use of technologies Poor pre-and-post e.g. genotyping, harvest handling data mgt 01 02 03 04 05 Production Inputs Postharvest Processing Market -Limited pre-and-postharvest handling -Poor market access -Unpredictable climate -Narrow technology technologies -Policy regulatory -Pests and diseases horizon -Poor handling and inappropriate shifts -Low productivity -Low yielding varieties storage leading to losses -Crop price volatility -Land fragmentation -Limited extension -Insufficient aggregation centres -Better nutrition & services -Limited mechanization across value gender responsive -Input price volatility chain breeding

  5. Focus Crops Cereals - Maize, Sorghum, Rice, Millets, Wheat, Barley Grain Legumes - Beans, Pigeon pea, Cowpea, Root & Tuber Crops – cassava, potato, s/potato, Industrial crops -Tea, Coffee, coconut, Oil Crops, fibre crops, Horticulture - Fruits (Musa), vegetables East African Breeding Networks Countries to compliment each other
