Memory processing is the ability to: • Acquire (Short term memory) • Manipulate (Working memory) • Retain (Long term memory) Memory • Retrieve (Long term memory) processing A difficulty with any one or more of these skills will make learning more challenging and require strategies to overcome the shortfall. Most adults have, and regularly use, strategies to support their memory in some or all of these areas.

How do we help children with memory processing issues? Short Term and Working Memory • Some of the memory games that will be modelled and included on this page can help – especially if an adult demonstrates good strategies for the children to adopt and regularly practice. • There are also more formal interventions for short term memory that can increase capacity. Long Term Memory • Lists, notes, mind-mapping. Repetition and rote learning to embed a process. Time to locate required information to answer a question.
