• Either written before 70 AD – or much later – mid 90’s AD, while John is very old (rumored to not die – all others had been martyred) • Only Apostle to die of natural causes • Possibly written in Ephesus • John was assigned by Jesus to care for His mother, Mary • John is the ‘disciple whom Jesus loved’ mentioned 5x – like Daniel (loved by God), given specific details about the end times
• Boanerges – ‘ sons of thunder ’ - Jesus gave this name to James & John, the sons of Zebedee (Mark 3:17) • Many paintings portray John as almost feminine … but Jesus saw him as a thunderstorm ! • John was a member of the inner 3 Disciples – with James & Peter • A co-worker in Jerusalem with Peter, during early years of the church (Acts3:1-4:23; 8:14; 12:1-2) • A ‘pillar’ of the Jerusalem church (Gal 2:9)
The Audience • Written for: The Church • Recommended to be the first place to start • Why Written? 20:30-31 “ … that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His Name .” Only book that states its purpose • Some say, possibly written after Revelation ? • “Wrath” in John 3:36 is only time John uses this word in any of his writings – except in Revelation, & it is always attributed to the world – not the believer or church
Writing Style • It is believed John laid out his events to represent the history of Israel – not chronological (as seen in the details of the miracles) • John isn’t a ‘ Life of Jesus ’ letter, but rather a statement of His Deity – evidence in every chapter, with signs and statements • Dig deep enough … you’ll find John structured similarly to Revelation • Many clusters of 7’s in the gospel (7 miracles, 7 I AM statements, etc.)
Seven Signs: ( 5 are unique to John) • 2:1-11 Turning water into wine • 4:46-54 Healing officials son in Capernaum • 5:1-18 Healing invalid at the pool of Bethesda • 6:5-14 Feeding of the 5000 • 6:16-21 Walking on water • 9:1-7 Healing a blind man • 11:1-45 Raising Lazarus from the dead
Seven I AM Statements
What’s unique? • Declarations of Deity: • Equal with God in nature (5:17-18) • Equal with God in power (5:19-21) • Equal with God in authority (5:22-24) • ‘ My hour has not yet come ’ – used 8x – A specific appointment to fulfill • Half of John’s Gospel is the last week of Jesus’ earthly ministry • One third of John is just the last 24 hours • John 3:16 - Being ‘ born again ’ - Everlasting Life (16x)
• For God the greatest Being • So the greatest degree • Loved the greatest affection • The world the greatest object of love • That He gave the greatest act • His only the greatest treasure • Begotten the greatest relationship • Son the greatest gift • That whosoever the greatest company • Believeth the greatest trust • In Him the greatest object of faith • Should not perish the greatest deliverance • But have the greatest assurance • Everlasting the greatest promise • Life the greatest blessing
Born Again Must be Born … from ‘Above’ • No man can “see” or enter the Kingdom of God without a spiritual rebirth - from above • Your birth was your entrance into this world - bringing with it the potential equipment (your physical tent) for adjustment to this world • ‘Born from above’ – means a transformation of a person so that they are able to enter the new (spiritual) world, and adapt to its conditions … it is a re-creation 2 Cor 5:17
Everlasting Life John 1:4,5,9,12 “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. … the true Light gives light to every man coming into the world.” “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” ‘Sons of God’ – OT term, meaning a ‘direct creation’ from God – like the angels, and Adam. We are currently not direct creations … we are indirect - descending from Adam. If we receive Him, we become new, direct creations of His hands!
John 1:1-2 John 1:3 “In the beginning was “ All things were made the Word, and the Word through Him, and was with God, and the without Him nothing Word was God. He was was made that was in the beginning with made. ” God.” Genesis 1:1 “ In the beginning God What verse speaks of created the heavens the earliest moment and the earth .” of all?
