Each of the four Gospels focus on a unique aspect of the sacrifice and ministry of Jesus Christ: • Matthew's focus is on Christ being the son of David and a King • Mark highlights the suffering servant aspect of his ministry • Luke showcases him as the Perfect Man • John proclaims Jesus is the One and Only begotten Son of God.

• Matthew, called Levi before following Jesus - means ‘gift of God’ • Tax collectors had to know shorthand – required of customs officials • Contains more references to money than the other gospels • Matt burned his bridges with the Roman economy, at great risk – 1st thing he did was throw a great party at his house! • Familiar with Jewish history & customs … Levi was from Capernaum • Well acquainted with the OT

The Audience • Purpose: to prove Jesus is the Jewish Messiah & King • Focuses Genealogy as “son of David” ( 9x ) & descendant of Abraham • Matthew presents Jesus as Israel’s Messianic King 12 times • 1 st book of NT – bridges OT & NT - 53 OT citations & 70 allusions • Presents Jesus as King – but a different kind – the Kingdom of Heaven • ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ (33x) – in no other NT book • John the Baptist announces the Kingdom is near • Jesus teaches the Kingdom parables • Giving the keys of Kingdom to Peter • Magi ask for King of the Jews

• Uses ‘righteousness’ more than any of the other gospels combined • Matthew’s gospel is the teaching gospel • Not chronological, but topical – making it perfect for teaching • Breaks down into 5 discourses : • Sermon on Mount concluding with 7:28 • Mission Sermon concluding with 11:1 • Sermon in Parables concluding with 13:53 • Sermon on Discipleship concluding with 19:1 • Sermon on the End Times concluding with 26:1 • If you take out the discourses – it becomes the shortest Gospel
