  1. Marsh Landing – Lake Overview By: Christina Kennedy Account Representative/Aquatic Biologist Solitude Lake Management

  2. • Aquatic Biologist/Account Representative • Background information: – I hold a B.S. degree in Zoology with a focus on Marine Biology and a specializationin marine ecosystem management. – I graduated from Michigan State University • Experience: About Me – Lab Manager Mote Marine Lab • Researched the effects of ocean acidification on calcifying organisms. – Lab Manager at FGCU • Conducted seagrass research in the Caloosahatchee Estuary and Matlacha Pass. – Solitude Lake Management • 5 year's experience.

  3. • A storm water system is a tool for managing runoff from rainfall and irrigation • A storm water pond is specifically designed to help prevent flooding and remove pollutants from the water before it can drain into the groundwater or into streams, rivers, lakes, What is a wetlands, estuaries, or the Gulf. Storm-Water system? Man- made “lakes” VS. The Great Lakes

  4. • The responsibility for permitting falls to SFWMD/County. • The upkeep of these systems are the responsibility of: Responsibility – Homeowners, Condominium owners, or Property Owners Associationetc. for Storm- • You can find Marsh Landing permits at this link: Water Ponds • http://my.sfwmd.gov/ePermitting/MainPage.do – Click on Application/Permit (located on the left hand-side.) – Under Project Name type in Marsh Landing.

  5. • Contractual Obligations:  1 treatment visit a month, 12 visits total. Services – Algae and Aquatic Weed Control – Shoreline Grass Control to the Water’s Edge SOLitude – Maintenance Reporting from tech provides for – Debris Removal Marsh Landing – Bacteria Treatment last quarter of 2019

  24. • Reduction in the nitrogen levels across the board and are at or below the desired range. • Little change observed in phosphorus levels however total phospohorus levels were already at or beloew the desired range. Assessments • Ammonia levels did not improve much over the last year, at a Glance ammonia concentrations are usually associated with organic build up which we know is an issue at Marsh Landing. • Bacteria was recommended to help reduce ammonia levels further. • Low DO and statification issues were fixed in all ponds where aeration was installed.

  25. Solutions

  26. • TGC are sterile, they will not reproduce. • TGC control aquatic vegetation NOT algae. • Recommended stocking size is 10-12 inches. • TGC are typically stocked in the winter. Triploid Grass • Marsh Landing would be responsible for the cost to fabricate and install a fish barrier, per FWC. Carp • Approval of permits by FWC can take several months. • Help reduce chemical applications and cost. • Continuous control of nuisance aquatic plants.

  27. • Though the lakes do show improved water quality the ammonia levels are still concerning. It is recommended that a second dose of bacteria be applied in the spring of 2020, and Marsh Landing On-Going may want to consider adding bacteria as part of the monthly maintenance. Water Quality • It is also recommened to sample the lakes again after a second Analysis and bacteria application to see if the ammonia levels have been reduced. High ammonia levels are toxic to fish and may impair bacteria fish populations. • Tracking the nutrinets can help determine if data collected represents an trend or a random spike or reduction.

  28. • The lake banks at Marsh Landing are shallow and wide and make Shoreline excellent grwoing conditions for algae and aquatic weeds. • Flowering littoral plants could help to occupy and shade these Plantings optimal areas reducing the ability for algae and aqautic weeds to grow.
