  2. What is feedback? Anything you are provided with that is going to help you to improve. In primary school you may be used to your teacher putting lots of red pen in your books to tell you how to improve. This is feedback. In secondary school we will use many different ways to show you how to improve and not necessarily use red pen after every lesson. This is still feedback. Remember: just because you might not see red pen after every lessons work, it doesn’t mean your teacher hasn’t marked your work in another way.

  3. Example 1 From watching a video of the cyclist training, the coach tells the cyclist they need to bend further forward in order to improve their speed. The athlete does as the coach suggests and takes 5 seconds off their personal best. Is this an example of feedback? Yes. Why is this an example of feedback? The coach has identified the area for improvement. The athlete has acted upon it and improved their PB.

  4. Example 2 A teacher has marked a student’s book and written a P comment in red pen showing the student how they can improve the piece of work. The student has acted upon the advice of the teacher and responded to the P comment and improved their work using green pen. Is this an example of feedback? Yes. Why is this an example of feedback? The teacher spotted the mistake and wrote a P comment. The student responded to that P comment and improved their work.

  5. Example 3 A teacher collects in a class set of books and looks at the piece of work the class have done. She notices lots of students have missed the same piece of important information from the work. She doesn’t write anything in their books. Her starter for the next lesson teaches the students about the section they missed and the students improve their work with green pen. Is this an example of feedback? Yes. Why is this an example of feedback? The teacher identified a mistake. The students were re-taught and improved their answers

  6. Example 4 A teacher looks at a class set of books and makes a note of areas where the class have done well and areas where they could improve. He doesn’t write anything in the students books. The teacher then makes a whole class feedback sheet for the students to respond to and they go through this in the next lesson using green pen to show their improvements. Is this an example of feedback? Yes. Why is this an example of feedback? The teacher identified the strengths and areas for development. The students acted upon the teachers advice using green pen to improve their work.

  7. Feedback to help you improve Marking your books using loads of red pen isn’t the only way to give you - feedback. It is your responsibility to act upon feedback your teacher provides in - whatever form it may come in. If you realise you are acting on feedback but your teacher hasn’t told you to - do it in green pen – remind them! You have to trust your teacher: if they ask you to do the work in green pen, - trust that it is because they have looked at your books and they have identified areas for you to improve. Remember: just because you might not see red pen after every lesson, it doesn’t mean your teacher hasn’t marked your work in another way.
