  1. CR – July 2015 Marking and Presentation Policy Rationale We believe feedback and marking should provide constructive feedback to every child, focusing on success and improvement needs against learning intentions; enabling children to become reflective learners and helping them to close the gap between current and desired attainment. Principles Marking, comments and feedback should: • Relate to learning objectives, which are shared with the children. • Provide children with opportunities to become aware of and reflect on their learning needs. • Provide recognition and appropriate praise for achievement. • Give clear strategies for improvement. • Allow specific time for children to read, reflect and respond to marking. • Involve children in the p rocess (whether oral or written). • Inform future planning and individual target setting. • Use consistent codes throughout the school. • Ultimately be seen by children as positive in improving their learning. • Encourage and teach children to self -mark wherever possible-peer marking. Marking pupils’ written work is an important part of teacher assessment. In order for marking to be effective it needs to have a purpose, which is to take pupils’ learning forward. Secretarial Features Whilst secretarial features can be important in developing a piece of written work, children will not be expected to apply all the criteria they have ever been taught for every piece of writing. This is to ensure that children can remain focused on the purpose of their outcome for learning and do not feel that they are being put in a ‘test’ situation. Therefore, teachers will not always use secretarial marking. However, when the teacher feels that it is necessary, they will use the following symbols. Symbols (to be displayed in classrooms and books) English Mathematics ______ Spelling mistake Correct ^^^^ Alternative word needed c Correction required ^ Missing word O Digit wrong O Missing or superfluous capital letter X Wrong (“”!?.) Correct or insert other punctuation TAS Teaching Assistant Support // New paragraph TS Teacher Support TAS Teaching Assistant Support or teacher’s initial = work noted TS Teacher Support or Good choice or teacher’s initial = work noted ? Doesn’t make sense M Merit TP Team Point M Merit Principles  Use verbal feedback where appropriate and possible  Use pupil self assessment/marking, peer marking and marking/success ladders where appropriate giving immediate feedback

  2.  Written comments should refer to the learning objective and/or pupil/class target  Marking will be in a different colour to follow the ‘Tickled Pink’ scheme  Where appropriate, written comments will have two positive and one constructive comment and can be bullet points e.g. - Sandwich comments (+ - +) - 2 * and a wish - 2 + and Even Better If - 2 and one next step - 2 * and one Top Tip Presentation  Pieces of writing will have an underlined full date and title (title can be the L.O)  Maths work will have the numerical date underlined  Children will write in pencil, working towards gaining a ‘pen licence’ which is awarded for consistently neat, joined handwriting along with accurate spelling.  Joined handwriting is expected in all year groups. Marking in all subjects should make reference to the learning objective. Document Links Assessment, Record Keeping and Reporting Curriculum Teaching and Learning Attainment & Achievement Policy Review A revised copy of the Marking & Presentation Policy has been produced.
