Gambling Harm in Monash Background ‘A well hidden issue’: A 2013 Monash City Council research project explored the impacts of Electronic Gaming Machine gambling. • The research identified community groups and vulnerable suburbs most at risk, particularly Clayton. 6
Gambling Harm in Monash Background Who are most at risk from gambling harm in Monash? • People of Asian backgrounds (especially young people) • International Students • People from low socio-economic backgrounds • Older people experiencing social isolation • Restaurant workers • People with mental health issues/other addictions • Trades and manual labour workers (especially shift workers) • Young males who play football and cricket 7
Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation Prevention Funding Opportunity $2.2 million available for projects targeting vulnerable communities and groups where the risk factors for developing issues with gambling are highest. 8
Monash City Council was awarded $205,000 to deliver the Clayton CANVAS program by June 2015. 9
Clayton CANVAS Overview A site-based pilot prevention program contributing to: Reducing gambling harm in Clayton Building the resilience of community to gambling harm Increasing community participation in alternative recreational & educational activities De-stigmatising problem gambling to enable help-seeking This program will saturate Clayton community with a range of initiatives targeting at-risk communities where they live, work, study and play . 10

Clayton CANVAS Clayton • Evidence of gambling-related harm in the area: o Monash suburb most impacted by gambling o 3 x Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) venues o Very high density of EGM’s per adult population o Most vulnerable at-risk groups reside in Clayton • Established Clayton Leadership Group to support the delivery of the Clayton CANVAS project 13
