  5. Why local delivery pilots ? • Complex problem of inactivity /inequality requires different thinking • Many small projects don’t add up to long term change • ‘people and place the starting point’ • ‘local system’ under pressure and can be fragmented • Seeking to change behaviour of people • I t’s a challenge of leadership (at all levels) Creating a lifelong sporting habit

  7. Pilots ots aim to: • Significantly increase activity – at scale • Put community involvement at the heart • Deliver wider outcomes • Take ‘whole system approach’ • Be sustainable • Use learning to scale up in other areas

  8. Whole le system? tem? … starting with a deep understanding of people, their lives and the barriers to being active – …before thinking about how every ‘layer’ effects their lives.

  9. Supporting people to be more active means we need to think about all these influences Policy E.g. Local strategies, budgets, laws, rules, regulations, codes Physical environment E.g. Built, natural, transport links Organisations and E.g. Schools, GPs and health care, Institutions businesses, faith organisations, charities, clubs Social environment E.g. Individual relationships, families, support groups, social networks and norms Individual E.g. Individual capability, motivation, attitudes, beliefs, knowledge and behaviours Source: Social-Ecological Model

  10. Good d work k you are doing ng • Building momentum • Spending time to get to know people and place • Trying to understand the local ‘system’ • Using the good work and knowledge you have • Measuring change and impact properly • Trying to ensure that PA is playing its role in the wider ambition • Being honest about some of challenges

  11. learni rning ng from m you and other er pilots ots: • ‘Nothing about us, without us’ – the importance of real engagement with communities • Not rushing into solutions – thinking about all the barriers and root causes • Don’t try to take it all on at once - make a start by focussing on the parts of the system that are ready to change – be willing to follow it anywhere • Its not what you do its how you do it, common purpose is key • Showing role of pa in the ‘whole’ is a challenge • Real change is difficult, takes time and means saying ‘yes to the mess’

  12. Where re next? t? • Keep building the common purpose and the story • Harness the people and the energy from tonight • Realise its behaviour change - us as well as people and places • Keep showing how physical activity can deliver wider outcomes • Use your insight and engagement to shape investment • Be prepared to challenge yourselves on joining up • Never forget this is different, tough, long term and about leadership (us all)
