Changes to Dual Credit La Vernia High School has collaborated with multiple partners to redefine our Dual Credit Programming. The La Vernia High School Counseling staff is available to help navigate this new programming.
What is Dual Credit (DC)? • Dual Credit is a voluntary program in which qualified Junior and Senior students may enroll in courses that receive both college and high school credit. • LVISD will be partnering with Angelo State University (ASU) - Member of the Texas Tech University System and St. Philip’s College to provide dual credit academic coursework.
Benefits • Courses earn both high school and college credits. • Low cost tuition! • Challenging coursework prepares students for the rigor of college work. • Weighted GPA points awarded on HS transcript • Shows colleges you were driven to take more challenging courses and therefore may impact college acceptance.
Transferable Credit • Students may earn transferable college credit hours. Public/state colleges and universities usually accept DC hours. • DO NOT ASSUME THAT DUAL CREDIT HOURS WILL TRANSFER. CHECK WITH THE COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY.
College Hours • The acceptance of the hours as core or elective is at the discretion of the college.
Course Delivery - On Campus Course instruction is delivered in one of two ways: 1. On Campus Instruction - On campus courses are taught on the LVHS campus by LVHS teachers who are qualified as adjunct instructors through Alamo Community Colleges and Angelo State University.
Course Delivery - Online 2. Online Instruction: – Some DC courses are taught online. All instruction and interaction with the professor is done electronically. – Because the course is a college course, the Family Education Right and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws deny parental access to professors and/or grades. – Online students MUST be self disciplined and mature.
Course Delivery - Online Continued • The professor teaching an online course may or may not know that a student enrolled in the course is a high school student. The course requirements and expectations are those required and expected of every college student. • Students enrolled in online courses are assigned a DC Computer Lab period for each course taken. Students have the time and opportunity to complete and submit their work during the computer lab period.
