What to Expect • A safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. • Focus on literacy, mathematics, social studies, science, health, music, physical education, art, and library. • A balance of whole group, small group, and individual instruction, language and vocabulary development. • Communication between the school, classroom, and home. 18

  19. Preparing for Kindergarten • Play games that require cooperative interaction and following directions. • Encourage your child to do things independently. • Have your child practice self-help skills. • Make sure your child knows important personal information. 19

Approaching the First Day • Ensure a healthy routine: sleeping 10 to 12 hours, eating a nutritious breakfast. • Establish a morning and evening routine based on the school start time. • Talk positively to your child about what will happen on the first day of school. • Acknowledge that your child may have a variety of feelings about school. 20

First Day of School • The School Board will adopt the 2020-21 school year calendar on February 6, 2020 • There multiple proposed options to either begin school before Labor Day or after Labor Day • Barcroft operates on a modified calendar and return to school is at the beginning of August. Barcroft families can attend Randolph as an alternative to the modified school year calendar 23

Student Registration ● The registration process officially begins Feb.1, 2020. ● If you plan for your child to attend your neighborhood school, simply register anytime From Feb. 1 to before the start of school. ● The timeframe to apply for an option school/program is Feb. 3, 2020 through April 15, 2020 by 4:00 PM. ● The same timeframe also applies for the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI), the Primary Montessori Program and the Community Peer Pre-K program. 25

ParentVUE Benefits of ParentVUE: • Access to your student’s school and personal information; • View your student’s daily attendance; • Manage and update your contact information when so you don’t miss important messages or alerts; • Manage and update emergency contacts and phone numbers; • View assignment grades and report cards; and • Communicate with teachers via email on ParentVUE. At the end of the registration process you will receive a ParentVUE activation key. Please use this to activate your ParentVUE account. 28

Option Schools Application Timeline • Online Application Form Dates:  Opens: Feb. 3, 2020 at 8 a.m.  Closes: April 15, 2020 (4pm) • Lottery at the APS Welcome Center  Held on April 23, 2020 (if needed) for Elementary  Held on April 24, 2020 (if needed) for Preschool • Notifications to be sent May 1, 2020 after 4:00 PM • Families must Confirm/Decline  By May 15, 2020 Technology devices and support are available at the APS Welcome Center located at 2110 Washington Blvd. for parents to complete the online application. 33

Options Online Application • Families must create an account to complete the options and transfers application or use existing account if they already created one for the previous year. • Families can create an account using an email address or phone number. • Families will be able to quickly and easily complete applications for multiple students. • The application can be accessed using a PC, tablet, or smartphone. • Families can select to receive their lottery notification via text, email or both. • Families will be able to check their location on the waitlist as it changes through the online application portal. 34

Option School Lotteries • If the number of applications exceed the available seats, APS will conduct a lottery to determine admission into the school/program. • When families apply to more than one school/program, their application goes into all lotteries simultaneously. • Immersion applications are divided into two pools: Spanish speakers and non-Spanish speakers. This lottery supports a 50/50 balance of English and Spanish language speakers. • Lotteries for all Elementary Options schools will be held on April 23, 2020 and on April 24 for Preschool programs at the Welcome Center at the Syphax Education Center (2110 Washington Blvd. - First Floor). 35
