KENYA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION (KCDF) KCDF Programmes, Community interventions and Corporate Involvement Presented by Wairu Kinyori, Programme Office, Policy, Media, Research & Advocacy SUSBIZ Joint Workshop 30 th October 2012 Travellers Beach Hotel & Club, Mombasa
"Go to the people, live with them, learn from them, plan with them, work with them, start with what they know, build on what they have. Teach by showing, learn by doing. NOT a showcase, but a pattern, not odds and ends, but a system, not piecemeal, but integrated approach . Not to conform, but to transform, not relief, but release." Attributed to Lao Tse, Ricardo Labez, & Y. C. James
TAKE HOMES • KCDF and what it does – Theory of Change • CSR is not an abstract concept • A Paradigm shift to CSR – Taking CSR to the next level • CSR is good business • SUSTAINABILITY
WHO IS KCDF? • We are a pioneer national public foundation established in 1997 • Core focus is on grant making to support community driven development in Kenya • Provided more than Kshs. 225 million (USD$ 3 million) to community programmes • Our Theory of Change based on rapid and enduring change is possible when communities initiate their own solutions to development challenges and if they harness and grow their resources. • Sustainability in all its initiatives and emphasis on mobilising local resources for investment, strengthening local institutions and building of sustainability endowment funds. • Promotion of Local Philanthropy and collaboration • Accountability and Transparency

Key Lessons & Challenges • Partners not looking at the community needs in project development • Socio-political environment • Resource mobilisation (sustainable grant making) • The competing demand from short term funding and narrow targets by partnership projects for KCDF time. • Balancing between quality, efficiently, effectiveness and prudence • The expansion of programmes have created new risk levels (how do we keep the same level of warm and cordial partnerships) not withstanding time and resources required to track closely each partner? • Negotiating and Securing longer term grants enables KCDF to share same benefits to its partners
Opportunities • KCDF has created a very good name with some of its existing partners (funders) – we have seen increased funding and requests • More communities taking initiatives in their development sustainability in community driven initiatives • Corporates/ Businesses partnering with communities sustainably for the benefit of both • Innovative Partnering opportunities with communities such as; – Pamoja 4 Change (Local resource mobilisation and matching), – Adopting community projects, – Market place events (Supplier – producer linkages), – Endowment building (sustainability) – Micro-credits (revolving funds) • Influencing policies that affect the community and advocating for community needs e.g Bills and Laws (Unclaimed Assets), Vision 2030 agenda
How to get involved? • Partnering with KCDF to identify community needs • Endowment Building • Local Resource Mobilization – Matching Funds • Grants to support programmes – Pamoja 4 Change – Education programme – Ustawi Food Security – Economic Development and Local Capacity Development – Youth Empowerment – Early Childhood Development – Policy
