WHY AN RCUT INTERSECTION? • Safety - RCUTs Traditional Design 42 Points Total significantly reduce Conflict Points the potential for and severity of crashes • Timely deliverability – can be constructed soon Traffic Flow • Low impact solution Conflict Points – requires minimal ROW RCUT Design Conflict Points 24 Points Total
RCUT INTERSECTIONS IN OTHER STATES “They [Minnesota drivers] went from having a lot of crashes to, when it was built in 2010, it’s had two very minor property rear-end crashes, and that’s in all the years since.” -Derek Leuer, Traffic Safety Engineer, Minnesota Department of Transportation “This evaluation found: • A 100% reduction of fatal and serious injury right-angle crashes • A 77% reduction of all right-angle crashes • A 50% reduction of injury crashes” Minnesota Department of Transportation, Leuer, D., P.E., & Fleming, K., M.A. (2017, May 23). A Study of the Traffic Safety at Reduced Conflict Intersection in Minnesota. Retrieved November 01, 2018, from http://www.dot.state.mn.us/roadwork/rci/docs/trafficsafetyatrcistudy.pdf
