Introduction • Carl Johnsson, PhD student from Lund University in Sweden Surrogate safety evaluation approach • Evaluation of surrogate safety indicators • InDeV EU-project Carl Johnsson and Aliaksei Laureshyn – Coordinated by Aliaksei Laureshyn ICTCT Extra Workshop – Vancouver, 2018 SURROGATE SAFETY MEASURES 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 2 What are surrogate safety This presentation indicators Framework for my research • Alternative/Complementary method to Accident analysis • Observation of near-accidents • The main advantage is that near-accidents occur more frequently than accidents 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 3 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 4 What are surrogate safety Surrogate safety indicators and indicators units of exposure Elementary units of exposure Relevance Measures exposure Measures risk Higher frequency Hydén, 1987 At what threshold does a surrogate safety indicator start to measure risk? 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 5 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 6
Study design Study design 1. At what threshold does a surrogate safety indicator start to measure risk? • Hourly meetings/severe events – Both road users move within the intersection Data from 4 signalized intersections – Manual trajectories for each meeting (one road user in a group) • – Spain, Poland, Denmark and Norway – PET – 24 hours observed from each site – Right turning motor vehicles vs bicycles • Negative binomial regression model from SPSS 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 7 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 8 Early results, PET Conclusion from the early results Risk Exposure The tested indicator does not show the expected correlation with the country specific parameters (connected to Risk) – Lowering the threshold values does also not produce the expected effect 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 9 09/04/2018 www.indev-project.eu No. 10 Visit us on www.indev-project.eu Thank you very much for your attention!
